Talk to me about Austin golf

Long story short. I am trying to decide where to move and have pretty much narrowed it down to either Austin, TX or Tampa, FL. I know FL has a great course selection around the area I mentioned but I am a little unclear about the golf in Austin. Will I be completely disappointed in the options around Austin if compared to FL? Decent public tracks in Austin? Affordable green fees? Can you golf pretty much year round if you are willing to battle the conditions a little? Just looking for a little more info. Thanks.

you will not be disappointed with the course selection, there are plenty of semi-private and public tracts to choose from. Avery Ranch, Wolfdancer, Forest Creek (green fees on these can range from $60-80) and others offer great golf at reasonable prices. Public courses are not too chabby either. you've got Jimmy Clay/Roy Kizer in south Austin, Morris Williams in east Austin and Lions in central Austin. All three are great munis that are kept up throughout the year. Some a bit slower than others, but still a good deal, $22 for walking during the day. Morris Williams just hosted the UIL State Championship this weekend and the course was in great shape. Lions hosts the Firecracker Open every year and its one of the most historical courses in central Texas.

You also have access to courses around the area, Bastrop, Manor, Salado and even San Antonio.

Play is great for 9-10 months of the year, if you're willing to put up with 50* weather in December or a bit colder in Jan-Feb.

check out the websites for some of these courses, you won;t be disappointed.

To expand on the golf a little, Teravista, Falconhead and Star Ranch are pretty good selections too.

IMO, Texas golf courses typically don't acheive the same playing conditions as those in the Florida, Southwest, or West Coast, but you can play year round here.

Golf aside....Tampa FL is over-rated. Sure, winter is nice, but summer and fall is super humid, and don't get me started about the bugs, especially the mosquitos.

I know you will like Austin better. Its modern, clean, trendy, still hot and humid in the summer...but not nearly like southern Florida. It's drier here than DFW or Houston, so your golf rain days are much less probable. Its also centrally located in the US, so day trips to beach/ski/golf are reasonable. In Tampa, its about 8 hours travel just to get out of state....its like living on an island.

I have not met one person who moved here and did not like it...except of course, this couple we met who moved here from San Diego...but you know.

+1
I live in OKC and go to Austin every summer. It has some awesome courses. I have played Terravista and Avery Ranch. These are SWEET courses and fantastic service.
