Can you replay a shot anytime you choose?

I was asked this question the other day... a regular player in a friends group, out of frustration will occassionally drop another ball and hit it... now in this particular case the player always plays his first ball (just annoys his playing partners by practicing) but it raised the question to them, what if someone just wasn't happy with the out come of any particular shot and dropped another ball in the same spot and replayed the shot, taking the original ball out of play and incurring stroke and distance... can you do that at you own choosing?

Yes. It is like calling a ball unplayable. You are the only judge.

Basing this on recollection, if you put a second ball into play (while the first ball is still playable) its a 2 stroke penalty in stroke play, or loss of the hole in match play. Then if you continue to play the second ball its another penalty for playing the wrong ball.

you ALWAYS have the option to call a ball unplayable even if it is in the middle of the fairway and replay the shot with stroke and distance.

Yes.

Also if you hit a provisional ball and you find the first ball, but you don't want to play it ( unplayable etc)

you cannot hit the provisional, but you can run back and hit another.

what if you hit a bladed shot onto the green but were really mad, so you dropped a ball saying it is a provisional and hit it on the green also, but proceeded to play your first ball, what would that be?

You may play a provisonal ball anytime you think your ball may be lost. If you can see the ball on the green, that would be practicing during the course of a round. It is two strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play (unless the hole is over and then it is no penalty in match play). I have a better one. What happens during better ball (foursomes) match play when you conceide a put and the opponent putts it anyway? Loss of hole if he does it before you putt yours for the same reason as above. You cannot putt it anyway to give your partner the line.

Which is easily one of the dumbest rules/decisions in golf. Remember the playoff with Phil a few years back? How long that took......
