Adams A7OS hybrid iron set(brief review)

A little background....I get to play between 5 and 10 rounds a year. I go to the range once a week if I am lucky. Like everyone else life reponsibilities get in the way of golf.

 

In my younger days I consistently hovered around a 3 or 4 handicap and the game seemed pretty easy. I started with Titleist tour model blades and have always liked a forged blade/muscleback kind of club.

 

The last few years as time became scarce for golf my swing kind of got away from me. I began hitting from the top, coming over the top, fat, thin...every kind of mishit you could imagine except for shanking.

 

When I play I still expect to break 80 but it is getting harder to do that.

 

Anyways, I was at the range a few weeks ago and they had a demo day going on with Ping and Adams there. I went to see what was available and I started hitting the Ping G15 hybrids...what an easy club to hit. I tried the Adams A7 hybrid...same thing..high and straight. I tried the G15 and I15 irons, good solid clubs. I really liked the Adams CB2 irons. They felt solid and I liked the way the KBS tours loaded on the backswing. I was just hitting for fun, I wasn't looking to switch or anything.

 

I had never hit something like the A7os irons. The 6 and 7 irons are semi hybrids but didn't look too bad to my eye. I hit both clubs and actually started laughing when the 5 or 6 balls I hit with each club took off and landed almost on top of each other. I realize they have jacked up lofts which gave me at least an extra club of distance but they were on target and solid shots. I went back and forth from the 3 and 4 hybrids to the short irons....they all felt solid to me. More importantly they allowed me to relax and the more I got comfortable the better I was swinging. I was also trying out a few tips about making better contact from a thread started my a member named Yasu in the swing/fitness forum.

 

I came back home and that night found a set on Ebay. I placed a bid and won it. The price was very good...several hundred dollars less than I could have purchased anywhere else.

 

I have now hit them 3 times at the range and used them once at a local course. I like them very much....The hybrids are great. They might be bigger than most people like but until the demo day I had never hit a hybrid so I don't have expectations to what is the "norm". The rest of the irons are shovels but I don't mind that if I am getting the results that I have been wanting but not getting. Don't get me wrong...there is nothing like the sight of a tiny blade sitting behind a ball but until I can get more time to play and practice I am ok with shooting a 1 over par.

 

Likes: I love how every club feels solid. I like to feel the clubhead and I just haven't had that feeling in a long time. Maybe it is a combination of light shaft and heavier head?? I don't know but they feel good to me.

 

They can feel pretty harsh with range balls but with a good ball they feel pretty sweet. I looked at the 7 iron today after playing yesterday and there is a bit of a wear mark right in the center of the face...I haven't hit the sweet spot of an iron for quite some time.

 

 

Don't like: I am not a fan of bright chrome finished clubs...satin finish does it for me or that dark finish on the Adams CB2 iron looks good too.

I wish they used a bit more traditional lofts. I don't really need to hit the PW 145 yards. I am carrying a ping eye 2 PW to use as a gap wedge. The Adam Pw is probably 44 degrees of loft and the Ping is 48 degrees.

 

I guess time will tell about how I will feel in another month or so. In order for me to play well I need to be relaxed and let the swing happen and I can do that with these clubs. I am going to order a tourstriker club to help get into a better impact position and maybe I will want to change back to a muscleback iron or keep the 3 and 4 hybrids and go with the muscleback for the rest of the set...who knows? I am having fun again and that is what counts.

I am currently bagging a4os irons and love them ...have hit the a7os 6 iron and seemed comparable.....great feel.... My feeling is to play what feels best to you and gives u most confidence and comfort.....some guys play x20's for same purpose (i know there are no hybrids.....but people play them for the same objectives......enjoy them man....and hears to good golf!

I have the A7OS #7 iron & #8 iron, both are the mid-hybrid types. The #7 iron is the best #7 I have ever hit in 50 years of golf. The #8 is OK also but
I am glad Adams now includes a short iron profiled #8 iron in the set. The Hybrid #8 was a bit of overkill for me but it does make chipping very easy.
I have a new set coming on Tuesday (4-GW) and I will post my review after playing half a dozen rounds.
