Distance measuring devices during a comptetive round?

I completely fail to understand the logic of USGA and R&A and therefore NGF (Netherland's Golf Federation) in netherlands to leave the decision to the local clubs.

 

When the touring pros know their yardages to within half a yard, why should us not-so-great players be denied that information.

 

Plus, it's only going to speed up the pace of play... no longer looking for sprinklers and walking funny from them to the ball.

 

Most of the old blokes at my local club strongly oppose allowing distance measuring devices (old blobs that hit their driver 120 yards)...

As far as I am aware, the R&A changed this rule from being a local rule as of this year. Now you can use your measuring device to your hearts content if you fall under their jurisdiction.

I only wish they did...The R&A website still says below in the appedix IV art. 5....

During a stipulated round, the use of any distance measuring device is not permitted unless the Committee has introduced a Local Rule to that effect (see Note to Rule 14-3 and Appendix I; Part B; Section 9).Even when the Local Rule is in effect, the device must be limited to measuring distance only
