A Visit To Suncadia Golf Resort in Roslyn, Washington

Recently while in the Pacific Northwest, I had the opportunity to stop by Suncadia Resort in Roslyn, Washington. If you’re not familiar with the area, think “Northern Exposure” (for those of you old enough to have watched the TV show).

 

Suncadia is about 80 miles east of Seattle and 90 miles from Sea-Tac Airport on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains. But it seems light-years away from the hustle and bustle of the big city once you arrive at the peaceful valley setting.

 

Commanding views of the Cascades and two golf courses that meander through tall pines, past a few streams and around well-placed ponds invite you to relax, forget about your workplace worries and enjoy your game of golf.

 

 

While that other Northwest resort 500 miles to the south on the Oregon Coast gets most of the publicity, Suncadia has the true flavor of what people come to Washington State to see — tall trees and mountain views.

 

Both golf courses — Rope Rider (a Peter Jacobsen design) and Prospector (an Arnold Palmer design) — can be as challenging as you want to make them. Choose the correct set of tees and you should make a birdie or two while getting the chance to possibly see a few eagles (as in the Bald eagles flying around).

 

The fairways are generously wide off the tee, the bunkers are well placed to tell you don’t hit it here and the greens are designed in size for the iron shots you should be hitting into them. The greens are a bit on the speedy side, though, so bring your soft touch with the putter.

 

Suncadia in the summer months will be a bit warmer than Seattle, but still feel very comfortable because of the elevation. For those who never have been to Washington State, there is a desert side to the area, which is ideal for growing grapes and making wine. Swiftwater Cellars is part of the Suncadia Resort that is owned and operated by the Watts family. Don and Lori Watts have opened a five-Star facility and continue to grow, add new amenities and make improvements to their operation.

 

Fine dining, live music (think major concert venue with current and past musical acts), a boutique and event space for private parties, weddings or corporate meeting space and a lodge for overnight stays make Suncadia equal Funcadia!

 

 

Take it from this former Washington state resident — the best time to visit is in the fall when the leaves are changing. The daytime temperatures are in the high 70s to low 80s with little-to-no humidity, less chance of rain, cool crisp nights, fewer people on the golf courses (at least until the word spreads on what a great destination resort this is) and the grape crush is on.

 

If you make a trip to the Northwest, plan on bringing your golf clubs and swing by Suncadia. You just might decide you want to buy a second home here.
