Hello from England

Recommended Posts

Hello! New to the forum, i've had the odd browse and liked what i've seen so here I am.

I'm 37 (tomorrow) and have played golf on and off for nearly 30 years. The madness of it all is that I have only ever had one lesson as an adult which put me off 'learning'. The instructor taught me what he did or thought people would find easier to learn as opposed to working with what I had.

As a youngster I had a natural, athletic almost self taught swing, was hitting rounds in the 80's by 13/14 at my local muni and then left the game alone for a few years.

Upon returning I enjoyed the increased power that I had acquired by growing. I had old retro Wilson Bernhard Langers and they promoted me to compress the ball (how I did I will never know). A few years of leisurely golf seen me break 80 a few times at the local muni.

Then another golf break happened and this time it was when I truly filled out! I bought some Cobra ssi irons, along with a SZ unlimited driver and to be honest my game has never had the athleticism it did with my old retro clubs. Gone down the analytical route so I guess that's where I am now. Paralysis by analysis.

January this year I joined the local golf club on the Wirral peninsula (not far from Royal Liverpool). After a few rounds which will probably see me get a generous handicap of 17/18 I decided I needed to get a lesson, Fortunately I chose the young assistant pro who is a good lad, very keen and seems to have a good eye.

One lesson in and he identified I was flipping at the ball and encouraged me to have my hands forward ahead of the ball. Tilting the shaft towards the target so as to have a flat left wrist. Immediately I was hitting those shots I'd forgotten how to do since I was a teenager - the ones that the wilson bernhard langers must have made me do.

So - my aim is to get down to single figures, how long will it take? No idea. The pro said he sees no problem in me achieving it, so I guess playing over the years has helped. Look forward to sharing any "eureka!" moments I discover with you.

so... In my bag...

Driver: Titleist 905R - 9 degree proforce shaft

Cobra baffler hybrid - 18 degree

Bit of a long winded intro but there you go...

Thankyou! I did get a fee pressies, everton football club branded stuff and a black nike roll neck. Cosiest thing I've worn - love nike golf clothing.

Next on shopping list 3 wedges , 52, 56 and 60. Brother just jot callaway v forged - copper. Nice. I need to get my game in a better place to be able to decide.

Thanks - got my 3 cards finished a 94 and two 98's on a par 72. The weather conditions for all 3 rounds were pretty dire, soggy fairways and with me going through tuition changes its to be expected.

I have managed to score a birdie and fair few pars in those rounds - I have had some holes were there were treble and quadruple bogies, so im guessing a generous handicap of 20-25.

I am having a lesson each week - so I think I may be in a position to possibly win a few comps if I play as well as I can (holding 18 holes together)

The lesson I had last week taught me to have my hands ahead of the ball (flat left wrist) - however yesterday I managed to take up 15 inch divots, with very heavy contacts. I'm going to stick with it. I may start a thread regarding my swing rebuild and handicap progress. A way of staying focused.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
