GAUGE JAPAN VS. GAUGE USA

DOES ANYONE KNOW?
HEY GUYS I WAS JUST BROWSING THROUGH EBAY WHEN I CAME ACROS GAUGE JAPAN PUTTERS. THEY LOOK BEAUTIFUL SO I DID A LITLE RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE ARE TO COMPANIES MAKING GAUGE BRAND NAME PRODUCTS BUT ARE NOT THE SAME COMPANY. ACCORDING TO THE USA C0MPANY THEY WERE TOGETHER BUT THE JAPAN GUY BETRAYED THE USA GUY AND REGISTERED THE PATENT BEFORE THE USA GUY COULD. ANYWAYS THE JAPAN PUTTERS LOOK BETTER BUT ACCORDING TO THE US COMPANY THEY ARE NOT AS GOOD OF A QUALITY.

HAS ANYBODY TRIED EITHER? DOES ANYONE KNOW THE TRUTH?

do some research on this board and on Tourspecgolf.com and you will see that the stories behind both are as clear as mud. There are too many opinions that come into the facts which only two men know. Those would be the original two partners who created Gauge Design before the partnership went south. I have putted with a Gauge Japan before and the craftsmanship was right up there with Scotty and Bettinardi. Good luck on your searchg for truth but this has been going on for at least two years (the speculation on the sides of the story) and it just keeps getting more and more complicated. I am not trying to keep information from you but there is so much to read and if I tried to put it all into this thread I would get a bout of carpal tunnel and I would more than likely mess something up and I do not want to misrepresent information because all I and most others on the boards know is rumor. Have a great day.

In my opinion David Whitlam the owner of Gauge USA makes some of the finest putters in the World. You have asked a very interesting question with your first post here at golf wrx.

Here are the facts:

Gauge Design by David Whitlam is registered in the United States while Gauge Design Japan is registered in Japan, Korea, EU, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Taiwan and a few other places.

Two separate companies with two separate owners and a completely different product.

First registration, trademarks, and patents anywhere in the world were issued in Japan.

( My personal opinion ):

David Whitlam putters are very well made in the USA with the majority made of SS303 or aluminum for the neo mallets. They are very good quality putters that almost match scotty cameron and Bettinardi yet the company lacks innovative designs after year 1. David Whitlam wedges are cast and made in china as is his original design fairway woods.

Gauge Design Japan has many lines, Pro Series is 100% made in Japan and superior to the product line of david whitlam in every way from quality control, aluinser design, product design and tungsten quality. Tour putters are made in Japan, NC-1, MB2, and all the original irons all made in japan as well as the wedges Extra steps that prove quality is top notch is CNC milled flat faces and grooves which are steps not even the top OEMs use due to cost. Due to the massive growth in the last 3 years the low output of japanese factories wasn't sufficient to supply their international markets so the Forged Series was created as an affordable option ( Made in China ). The Fairway woods are also manufactured in China.

The G-Field Card:

G-Field is set to release in the U.S/World market in 2006 with a large large variety of putters and designs. The company has multiple investors and is well funded for a PGA tour presence, Due to the size of the U.S market and price points much of the product will need to be made in China to supply the growing golf market in the states. The top tier G-Field products will be 100% made in Japan at higher price points, the bottom tier of the line will retail at an inexpensive 149.00 USD. there will be a total of 3 or 4 different pricing tiers with the top end made in Japan.

Its unfortunate that there was a fallout between the two men, Good luck to them both in the future and may the company with the better product flourish.

We may never know the whole story between these two companies, but one fact speaks volumes. Gauge Design Japan designed a fairway wood and had it manufactured in China. Due to poor quality they rejected the product. Gauge Design USA then purchased the product (from the Chinese factory) and sold them to unsuspecting customers as a quality fairway wood. This action alone goes to character, or lack of it!!
