Clone irons

today on craigslisti cam across a set of taylormade r7 clones, and i was wondering what the biggest differance is. Do they preform the same, are they as durable? They guy makes these himself by hand out of his house so i would think the quality woiuld be fine. He also uses the sme steel as the real r7's. So are there any pros and cons to clons, tell me what you think please.
what do u think about the real r7's compared to the eye 2's?
Both are good clubs. I'd try them side by side to see which one you prefer. Just be aware that the loft of the R7's is significantly stronger than the Eye 2's, so they will fly further.

My friend bought a set of the clone R7s on ebay. He didn't have much to spend on a new set and needed a +1.5" set. These only set him back $170 for SW-3i and he hits them pretty good. Up close they don't have the same quality as a real set of TMs but for the price you can't argue. They came with real DGS300 shafts.

When you experiment with other irons sets, as golfers inevitably do, just remember that your Ping eye2 irons are a classic set of irons. Do not ever sell them. Leave them in the basement in case you decide you want to put them back into play some day whether for a round or two or for an entire season.

Just curious... Considering this person makes these in his garage, is he a professional club builder or hobbyist? Another question would be are you sure they are clones versus component heads. Did he simply express that they were like the TM R7's comparatively speaking.

There are nothing wrong with certain component heads our there. As long as the materials are of quality, I would put some components ahead of some OEM's. Especially, if the set is fitted to you...

With all that being said, not ALL, components are manufactured equally. So beware. As a new golfer you want to learn the game before you worry about what brands you carry in your bag.

I for one started with a 2nd hand set from play it again sports years ago. My first set of "New" clubs were custom fitted clones of Callaway X-16's. I choose them specifically b/c my buddy had a set (both of us were lefty). After the 3rd round with them my buddy wanted to use them instead of his official ones... I will agree that I have heard that many people not had my story.

just my two cents...

^^^^^Every thing u just said is the basis of my concerns, with that being said im not a beginner golfer im just looking for a good cavity back thts going to give me a competitve edge in my highschool golf team, so i figure ill just buy a used set of the r7's so i wont have worry about the durability and performance thanks for the input

I agree. You have great irons.

After reading this post, I'm reminded of a guy who beat me out at Aguila in Arizona. He was playing Tommy Armour knockoffs at the time (with shafts fitted for him by a place called Dynamic Golf) and shot 67 that day from the back. Yea, he destroyed me by almost 10 shots. It suggests that you still need to put a great swing on any shot.
