Getting hands forward at impact

Recommended Posts

Everything you're struggling with here is related to your hands/wrists. In order to achieve any amount of shaft lean at impact you need lag, and in order to achieve lag you need to use your hands/wrists properly as well as sequence them correctly with your body. We only need to focus on the former because you can't possibly achieve any lag currently because you are actively resisting loading your wrists:

You're basically swinging the club with just your arms/shoulders with basically zero hand/wrist involvement, therefore lag and shaft lean are impossible. If this is a product of any amount of "take the hands out" or "quiet wrists" or similar swing approaches, know that this is not what that means and this level of under-utilization of the hands/wrists is a major fundamental flaw, especially given how much speed you're trying to create with the rest of your body which your hands are incapable of catching up to:

To have your hands this late and stuck behind you in the downswing in this case comes from a severe mismatch in hand speed (slow) and body speed (fast). You're forced to flip severely from here to make contact with the ball, if you didn't you'd miss it.

The solution is to learn how to get your hands/wrists loading and working correctly to create speed. Padraig's Wrist Drills are a clear starting point, and in doing this you'll also want to address your grip:

That right hand is rotated far too clockwise (strong) and basically underneath the grip. Hinging your wrists correctly per the drills above will be difficult with this grip, and overall it's very unbalanced anyway and likely functioning as a bandaid to keep the clubface square since you have no wrist load/unload to naturally do that correctly.

Thanks for the detailed response, one question I have is by hand speed you mean moving the hands faster via the wrists, and not shoulders/arms/lats/something connected to my hands?

Correct, more specifically moving the *club* faster with the hands which is made possible via loading/unloading of the wrists.

Yes. You basically have no power and your hands stay too far back. By setting the wrists or kind of throwing the club behind your right shoulder you'll strat to feel the weight of the club. Then in the downswing you want to start by bringing the arms down. At the moment your hips are firing too fast and the arms lag behind. Fire those arms down and then let your body react. I like this drill.
