SHORT PUTTERS & TALL GOLFER

ROBOPTI

Recommended Posts

So I cut mine down and took it to the green, I'm so mad I didn't do this earlier lol. I kinda tinkered with my stance, left foot a little back so my lower body was open, and then the feel was like I just push it down the line. Felt like I saw my line much better from that stance, similar to Tony Finau

I'm 6'3" and have long arms, but I also have a 36" inseam. Was fitted at the Cameron Gallery in Encinitas to a 37" putter and loved it for a long time. The original Tour Rat Concept 2 head weighs a lot less than standard Newport Select heads, thus with the 5g weights, there was the length with a fairly normal swing weight. Standing a little taller with normal posture took a lot of the tension out of my stroke vs what I was experiencing with a standard 35" Select with 10g weights. I'm now back down to 36", but have to have the head weight light enough to stroke it without feeling I'm swinging a sledge hammer. I've messed around with my wife's putter in the house, but every time I bring it out to the course, I just can't seem to get my putts on line. Maybe that's what the previous poster was referring to.

I am 6'5", left eye dominant, and have gone around the world on putters over my 30 + year of playing, short, long, face on, belly, broom, etc. I have gone back to Pat Obrien's methods and fitting philosophy, which puts me in the 37" range, natural arm hang, fingertip grip to get the tension out of the fore arms. My grip is even a little different as I took some advice on the angle of your palms in your grip being similar to the angle that they naturally hang. For me, they are slightly open. I see the line better when I am more erect and my eyes are a couple of balls inside the line.

Mike Malaska did a video on lining up putts and how your eyes see the the line. I thought it was an interesting process / test and while doing the process, it confirmed for me that I see the line better while standing up and NOT having my eyes directly over the ball.

I'm sure everyone is different, but you definitely have to get fit so that you are comfortable, with very relaxed fore arms, allowing a nice tempo and natural path for the club head. IE no manipulation of the stroke.

Great video! Saw it a while back and made a lot of sense. I like how it is up to the individual. See what works for you.

I think the key is getting your eyes in the right spot to see the line and hit the sweet spot of the putter.

I find a natural elbow bend really helps with tension and hovering the putter slightly.

Swing weight also plays a big role for any putter over 34.5" though. So take care when choosing your head weight. Counter weighting can help but I find static weight plays a role as well.
