Sentry World Review

Sentry World was at one time, before Whistling Straits and Erin Hills. one of the premier private/public courses in Wisconsin. Last year they closed the course for the entire season and did a complete face lift. It is hard for me to put my finger on exactly what was changed as I hadn't played the course in over ten years. But I can say they did a superb job. I had intended to get on since the beginning of the year and I am sorry it took me until the end of August to make it happen.

It plays 6400 yards from the whites and about 6700 from the blues. I don't recall the distance from the tips and I am kicking myself for having left the score card on the cart. Fairways are generous, although landing areas are well bunkered. The greens are small which I like and few are round. They tended toward ovals and kidney bean shapes with lobes that made for some wicked pin placements. I guess I would characterize this as a second shot course. You really shouldn't find much trouble off the tee, but you will hit every club in your bag going for greens, trouble abounds for missing and they are not generally large targets. Putts ran true on greens that had some sort of undulation. Usually tiered or with a ridge line running through them. They were not diabolical with multiple rumples. Today was very cool morning with a lingering fog. The greens were damp and fairly slow at the onset and sped up as the day progressed, the sun came out and things firmed. I never did feel that I got a true sense for "normal" speed. I doubt that they ever get lightening fast.

At $110 for a summer Sunday I thought greens fees were very reasonable and included a cart. The practice range is very nice, near the first tee and is complimented by a good putting area. The course is easily walkable and hills are rolling at best. I've played all over southern Wisconsin. Erin Hills, The Straits, the Dells, University Ridge, Lake Geneva, Lawsonia. This course was by no stretch the most difficult, but it was easily one of the most manicured. Conditions were the definition of excellent And the staff is down home warm, friendly and there to help.

The drive is 2 1/2 hours north west of Milwaukee, beyond Kohler, Erin HIlls, Lawsonia, Washington County and other often mentioned favorites, but for my dollar well worth the hike. When the Sand Valley project near Wisconsin Rapids is completed this will prove to be a favorite addition to the itinerary.

I really wanted to play this course this year. It's about an hour away from me. We were going to have a scramble there middle of September but couldn't agree on a rate.

Surprised to hear you think it isnt that difficult lol. Family works at the insurance side so I can get on for a big discount once or so a year. Played today and conditions are some of the best I see in my rounds (and that includes pebble beach).

Take a step back to the TIPS and then get back to me on it "not being difficult" LOL. 71-7200 yards of pain and suffering.
