Suggestions to replace my 975J?

Yellow Jacket

Recommended Posts

I played a 6.5* 975D w/DG S300 for 3 years and it was great. Sure, it weighed as much as a tank, but I hit a straight and long enough.

I upgraded to a 7.5* 975J w/ProLite 35 stiff and have been using it for the last 3 years though I don't play much anymore. However, I've noticed that I'm quite inconsistent with it. While I realize this is almost entirely a function of the shaft, the 975J is an outdated head.

So, assuming that I throw in a tip stiff, X or S flex shaft (think Grafalloy Blue) with an 8.5* or 9* loft, what drivers would you suggest? The r5/r7 seem to be extremely popular. I've always been a fan of Titleist though I seem to hit everything well as long as the shaft is stiff enough. I hit the old Ping TiSi very well but I don't really like the G2 or G5. The older R500 series felt horrible at contact and the Launcher is just WAY too light. So, should I just look for a .83 COR driver that feels good? After all, if everything has the same COR, it's simply a matter of forgiveness as far as performance is concerned.

Also, and this is VERY important, which popular drivers have draw bias? My natural ball flight is a draw so I don't need more of it. Callaway and Cobra seem to, but I hear that the 983K and possibly the 905T have slight draw bias.

If you dont want to spend too much money and your want a smaller looking head go with the 983K. I dont really know much about the draw bias in this head but when I have tried it, it always seem to be a solid driver. It can also be found for cheap right now. Ive only tried one 905 and it ballooned on me but that might have been the shaft in it, a NVS 65R.

I agree with Brad on the 983 K, and I don't think it's draw biased either. Another thing, the Titleist Fuji 757 stock shaft is a decent shaft for that head, regardless of a more popular consensus among shaft snobs. :fool:

Is the 983K a .83 COR driver?

I belive it is. It was relased of at the time so it has to be pretty dang close to the .83 limit, although it wasn't advertised that way. ObieTrice5 suggested the 983E for me personally I didn't like it because it looked too small at address. The K looks more like a blown up J to me.

It's a tough call because the leap from 975D to 975J is nowhere near as big as going to the 983K or 905T. A blown up J as golfscene refers to it is an understatement. Ever since Titleist when the longer faces, they generate too much spin for me and I can't stand them.

Tourstage makes some nice traditional pear-shaped heads that look like slightly bigger versions of 975Js.
