Ball Position, Casting/Scooping Help

Recommended Posts

Well I had my first video lesson and it seems like I am casting and scooping the ball, leading to thin shots. Can anyone chime in with any drills or comments?

Also, could I just get an idea of where people line up with ball in relation to the center of their body (SW, PW, 7i, 5i, 3i)?

Any help here would be much appreciated!

thanks again!

Casting and scooping: good thing you know what you are doing wrong.

We know your swing is too loong... what do I mean by too long well If I was a betting man

you swing will travel way too far inside and then travel well pass parallel because you need time to square the club face...! re route. If you measured the distance the club head traveled it would be longer than you thought.

The first thing I do is hit balls by stopping my swing at the top and along the way try to shorten up the distance the club travels to get there.... then I would eliminate the back swing (hit balls) by starting the club at about just past my thighs so my hands are positioned just in front of my fly and club head out side my hands from here I stick it straight up in the airt and hit the shot.

HOPE IT HELPS YOU AS WELL

had that problem ingrained in my swing...so i bought a perfect angle (to limit the backswing) and an impact bag (to help feel proper impact position) and stuck a headcover under my left armpit...

huge improvement in ball striking....

since i've become a once a while player, i just hit the impact bag w/the perfect angle the night before my round and that helps a lot from a ball striking perpesctive...

You guys hit it right on the head. I went back to the pro that I'm taking lessons with and had good sit down and talk with him. And we started a swing change. I have to admit I don't have an all too pretty swing but its improving. I'm about 5'7" @ 180lbs. I'm big into lifting weights. When I swing I use 90% upper body. Last night my pro and I did some drills including shortening my back swing and using more of a shoulder turn and actually putting my hips into my swing.

Now this is the kicker.....

I'm no longer scooping or casting, now that I've incorporated my hips into the swing I can't seem to square the club up at impact. I go from hitting draws and hooks to fades and slices with the introduction of a full hip turn and a shorter back swing, again I call on you guys for a little help, maybe some drills. Thanks again!!

At this point studatnu dont take anymore of our advice at this point, it will only cause you more headaches. Your in the beginning stages of a major swing change, and your ball striking is/will suffer for a time because of it. This is a natural event and you just have to keep working on it to get better. Your body will catch up, but not overnight.

The reason your hitting fades/slices now is because your hands are used to having more time to square the face. They have to "relearn" how to properly release during the swing. Once they/you become adjusted to the new swing, they'll start to fire faster and begin squaring the face. Your instructor seems to have identified the same problem that the other's on the board mentioned, so stick with his advice and drills for the time being. Once you've done so for awhile, and if your still stuck........then feel free to ask for additional advice.

Best of luck with the swing change.

  • 3 weeks later...

[When I went to a teaching pro to cure my casting problem, he changed my address position to make sure that most of my body/weight was behind the ball, especially my head...he told me to make sure that my head stayed behind the ball thru impact. Have your guy video you to see if maybe you're moving your head. When I hold my head back behind the ball, the ball flight is straight.

Bingo! the first time I felt that I was keeping my head behind the ball my pro stood across from me and held my head still. I started using the Nicklaus head caulk at address and look at the back side of the ball with my left eye (even though I'm right eye dominant) and it has really helped me to strike the ball much crisper and significantly longer. (because I'm no longer losing distance with a slice)

Also, I have a little guy that's five yrs. old and when we play, I'll lightly hold his head if he's having a problem. He loves to see his ball go 50 yards. So do I!!!
