Shortening a Putter Length...

Hey guys,

What is usually the general rule for how much the actual weight, and the swing weight falls when cutting a putter? What I mean is, if I were to cut a 34" putter that weighs 340g down an inch to make it 33", that wouldn't make the putter weigh 330g b/c the weight on the entire putter is obviously not distributed evenly. How would this effect the putter weight, and what are some methods of adding weight to it other than adding lead tape to the head? Also, where do you guys usually add the lead tape on the putter...on the bottom, back??? Any sort of feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

on my putters, i would put a few strips of lead tape on the sole of the putter. it worked well and the only negative was if you wanted to remove the tape it left some sticky residue behind. so i moved to putting tungsten powder in the end of the shaft. just remove the grip, pour however much powder you need down the shaft and then use a cork to lock it all in place. take a ram rod to push the cork down the shaft. it looks cleaner then the lead tape.

Most putter heads weigh 300 grams. Mostly, those heads are in putters that are 35 inches long. But the shaft will weigh about 100 grams so the over all weight is closer to 400 grams, and oh yeah, the grip. Another 60? OK the putter is heavier than we thought but the answer to your question is that the shorter the putter, the more weight is needed to maintain feel. My putter is 33 inches and the head is 330 grams. But, the feel is the same as a longer putter. All that is about swing weight, and a simple scale will help you maintain the feel by measuring the swing weight. That should guide you to how much weight to add to it.

The modern trend is to make the heads heavier so the stroke is smoother. Some heads weigh 400 grams and alot of new ones are 330 to 350. So when you fix yours up, add more weight and see if you like the new trend. Of course, then there are the greens you normally play on. Fast? Slow?
