Help me pick a course (Scottsdale)

I'm headed to Scottsdale this weekend for a few days of R&R and planning on playing a couple of rounds of golf. Right now I'm set up to play The Boulders, but I need at least one other course (can't decide if I'll play 2 or 3 times - depends on the wife). Right now I've got it narrowed down to We ko pa, Suridge Canyon, Eagle Mountain, TPC Stadium, or Talking Stick....leaning towards We ko pa. Grayhawk and Troon North are closed for overseeding and Legend Trail is just reopening so conditions will probably be suspect at best.

Any thoughts, recommendations, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This is my first trip to Scottsdale, so I'm pretty excited about palying a couple of these courses. The factors that are the more important would be: condition and lkayout of the course, scenery (preferable "desert" style), location (preferably fairly close to the Troon North area).

Thanks for any and all input.

I would highly recommend We Ko Pa. I have played it a couple times and it is a true desert course. It has some huge elevation changes and the scenery is fantastic. The condition the times I played it have been excellent. The course is pretty challenging from the tips with a course rating of around 74 I believe. This would be my pick. TPC of Scottsdale is highly overrated. Talking stick is nice, but We Ko Pa is better. Have a great trip!

I think you will be dissapointed with the Boulders, is it still $300.00 a round. For the money there are so many nicer courses in and around Scottsdale.

If you look back through the travel forum there should be an old thread with along list of courses that another member and I put together for someone else.

Eagle Mountain is very nice, and SunRidge Canyon is right across the street, both great courses. TPC is in great shape, but not a very exciting course, you get to play a course that hosts a PGA event, but no wow factor.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive my recommendations are to go toward Tuscon to Raven @ Verrado and Estrella Mountain Ranch, both are just miles apart, both are great courses, two of my favorites.

I will see if I can find that old post for you and bring it back up, it has a bunch of courses. I have played so many great courses out there, I go 2-3 times a year, it is my favorite golf destination. Good Luck.

JHR, thanks for the hlep. I really don't want to have to drive too far....trying to keep the wife on the happier side. The 40 minutes to We ko pa is about as far as I would want to go. The Boulders is gonna cost around $160. I've heard mixed things about it, but usually more good than bad. Why did you not like it so much. One reason I'm playing it is because it is fairly close to where I'm staying. Are Sunridge and Eagle Mountain that much better? Also, are there houses on those three courses? Thanks again. BTW, I did see that list that was post on the other Scottsdale thread. It was helpful.

Boulders was nice but some of the holes were not very dramatic, some are though. It is a nice course, don't get me wrong, but when i played it , it was $300 and there are so many nicer courses. yes, there are houses and condos and a resort on the boulders.

I don't recall any housing on Eagle or Sunridge, if there is , it is minimal. But it has been a couple years since I played them, they could have built it up since. You could check out the sites and do a hole by hole tour and see. Like I said, though are so many nice courses that you can play, it is hard to go wrong.

You can always go down to ASU/ Karsten and play where Phil played college golf.

Where are you staying?? North Scottsdale area?

I'm staying at the Four Seasons...I guess that's considered north Scottsdale. I looked at Kierland, but the others looked more interesting.

We Ko Pa has to be a definite. For the $$ you're paying at the Boulders, it's okay. I like Eagle Mountain, very nice layout but there some homes now. SunRidge Canyon is also nice, I think I like Eagle better.

Too bad about Troon North, it is awesome. Do you have any private connections, there are a few gems up in that neck of the woods?

Have Fun!!!

Talking Stick (either North or South) has to be your first choice ... golf as it should be played and it is not target desert golf.

I've played Legacy numerous times and there is something funny, different about the course. Perhaps it is the mounding and really, really deep fairway bunkers, so deep that you can't reach the green in most cases.
