Houston Golf Trip

Friends Visiting in April
I have a couple of friends from Illinois coming to Houston over Masters weekend in early April for a weekend of golf. We will be playing Thursday-Sunday and I thought I would get some recommendations as I still haven't played many of the courses in town.

We will be playing the tournament course at Redstone on Friday morning and 36 at Champions on Saturday. I'm looking for two more courses to fill out the weekend. I was hoping to make a trip up to Whispering Pines on Thursday, but I was told that they don't reciprocate with other clubs. I'm considering Augusta Pines, Meadowbrook Farms, High Meadow Ranch, etc. Like I said I don't know much about these places so any reviews of them or other suggestions would help. Thanks guys! :drinks:

Looks like you have quite and expensive weekend ahead of you.

I forgot about Blackhorse South - another one I was thinking about.

It isn't going to be a cheap weekend, but with some of the golf destinations that these guys visit they think Houston is an amazing bargain.

Blackhorse South, Champions, Redstone (Members course is much better than Tournament if you can get on), Fish Creek, Augusta Pines, Blaketree (check on conditions beforehand), Wildcat (Lakes)

I bet The Houstonian will reciprocate. Wildcat Lakes would be a good one, especially on a clear day with the views of the city. Kind of neat for out of towners and its a much better course than the Highlands. Another good one if you are willing to make the hour-plus drive is High Meadow Ranch.

High Meadow Ranch is one of the courses that I was thinking about. Not too far from where I live on the northwest side of town. I hadn't thought of The Houstonian. I know sometimes clubs don't like visitors that live in the same city (which could be a problem with me), but I'm sure they would allow my friends on as they are both members of a nice private club in the Chicago area.

How would you rank High Meadow Ranch against Meadowbrook Farms?

hahahaaha, i was reading slicer's reply and was thinking "this guy has really good taste!"........then i see below that he agrees with me.......;)

i've played shadow hawk, but was not overly impressed. besides the aura and exclusivity, the course layout is really so so (not really "exciting"), i prefer houstonian over it.

Having never played SHGC, I can't speak from personal experience, but I have heard the same thing from more than one person. Now, if the WOW factor has anything to do with it, its hard to top the fact that you could run into George Bush or Roger Clemens (although he better be training for June instead of hitting balls  ), not to mention pretty much have the enitre course to yourself at the right time on the right day.

normal......nothing extraordinary... meadowbrook has good greens, wildcat, fish creek all have good greens.

i prefer good layouts and conditions most of all. shgc has good conditions (houstonian is right next door and basically exactly the same), but disappointed in the layout. i guess if you can play it, i would go ahead and do it (give it the old college try...;)

Absolutely play River Ridge in Sealy! I've been playing it the last two weeks and it's in great shape. Also, the brisket sandwiches are great!

Avoid Blaketree National right now---the greens are bare right now!

Blackhorse South is still recovering from the flood. I would hit High Meadow Ranch or Fish Creek.

Thanks for the update. We're heading out to High Meadow Ranch in the morning on Thursday and I was thinking about playing Blackhorse that afternoon, but I'll go elsewhere if we decide to play a second round.
