Soft stepping and Shaft Length

I bought a set of MP54 with S300 shaft +1". Normally I play +1/2" (last set was PXi 5.0 which was way too high launching) and have had some success with my son's +1" Project X 5.0. I figured I would try the S300 as is (great price) and then soft step them if they were too long - but didn't realize they would actually get longer!

 

My question is: can I soft step them 1x or 2x to get a softer feel and slightly higher launch (without losing too much of the S300 low launch) AND still butt trim them 1" or so? Is there a limit to the butt trim?

 

Overall I like the S300, much straighter flight for me than PX5.0 but its much harsher and am losing about a club distance. Typically a stiffer shaft helps mitigate my casting flaws and gains me distance.

 

Any help?

You should be fine.

The only "limit" to butt trimming is if one goes too extreme, the grip may extend into a narrower section of the shaft.

When I hear a golfer talking about harsh feel, I know they arent swinging at a high enough speed. The loss of length you describe supports this. Where you were able to bend the 5.0s you now cant bend or load the s300s as easily, and you probably have lost some head speed. Please understand this requirs a small technique change, and just a little different swing thought.

The general idea, if you were standing in a swimming pool with water up to your waist, is to splash the water with the end of the clubs and hands first. This is the late lag idea, and will produce a real jump in headspeed with what looks and feels like an easy swing (because it is). Your grip is the key to this move, as it is more a hinge down than a swing down. The grip will need to be correct, stronger and more down in the fingers, so you clear the wrists for the proper freedom of movement. And you are gonna be a mess on the range, as you are gonna be swinging a path with your wrists, where you were swinging it with your hands. But know the hands are gonna be in the lag condition until a much later release so you wont be doing that the same as you did. Anyway, the increased head speed is gonna cut earth like it isnt there, and make the s300 perform and feel much better.
