Ideal performance tracking device

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

There seems to be companies coming up with copycat systems ie CaddieOn and Golfpad but no one has really moved the tech on from GG and Arccos!

Having read both of the Game Golf and Arccos threads, some fascinating comments on both, I started thinking if you had certain criteria to be in the next performance tracking device what would it be?

Would it be how you collect data? Get rid of the tagging or iphone use?

Or does the platform matter more and any specific statistics you think would be cool to see?

Platform definitely matters to me.

I do NOT want to have to use my phone throughout the round. I actually like the "tagging" of the Game Golf. Starts my pre-shot routine.

Interesting Cactus. How deep do you dive into your statistics? Do you have certain KPIs that you look at?
I don't go very deep compared to other players here.

I find that I like to look back and see that:

Drives are missing more to one side of the course (35% drives missed right, 11% missed left)

GIRs and FIRs

Keeping my average putts down

Making sure that my missed approaches to the green are missed short rather than long

Iron distances are relatively even
You raise an interesting question.

I would state the problem as finding the least obtrusive way to collect the maximum amount of data. My history includes use of Lasers, Swingbyte, Garmin GPS watch and keeping a "caddy" scorecard. My results from last year are linked here (http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1168015-confessions-of-10-index-with-meticulous-statistics/).

In addition to what I tracked here the additional information that I would find useful would include club used, shot distance result location. Personally, I'm not interested in working with more than 1 device on course. If we could assume a world of instantaneous and accurate gps acquisition I would propose the following provides a maximum amount of information with a minimum amount of intrusion.

Initiate round

Walk to shot location
Watch type device showing distance FMB when moving
Swipe to alternate hazard/layup location distance display

Stop walking
Watch display updates to usual club selection from this distance on this hole based on previous rounds.

Practice swings begin
Watch begins acquiring accelerometers and gyro (swing speed and wrist orientation)

Swing club
Tap to confirm or swipe and tap to change clubs.
Last swing info is saved

Pick ball out of hole
Immediately Tap to end hole (maybe a hard button as Apple digital crown)

What do we end up with?
Swing info on every shot (not as accurate as ball or club tracking devices but I think interesting info would be gained)
Result of every shot (distance, location)
Club selection on every shot (combined with swing info you might even characterize as stock, stepped on, 3/4, finesse, pitch, chip, flop etc)
Some Lie Info (Fairway, Greens, Hazards as mapped by GPS)
Some basic Boolean operations give you FIR, GIR, U/D, Sandy etc percentages
Putting results including number of putts and make percentage by distance (ending the hole immediately when picking the ball out of the hole gives you the hole location)

Practice
Device is acquiring swing info in practice mode.
Hit a perfect 7 iron, tap to enter and now that is added to "stock" version for comparison.

I'd agree that technology might not quite be available to realize this vision but I think we're quite close.

Kickstarter anyone?

I play so bad, but it feels so good!

I think one of the issues is how the rules of golf interprets these devices. I agree with your process but I think giving club advice would make it non-conforming.

I like your concept of being able to break down shots by 3/4, stepped on and stock.
Agreed. Definitely not conforming. I bought the z6 instead of the tour x. For that very reason. I think the device would appeal to almost all of the golfing population. Most of the avid golfers I know take an occasional inside the leather gimme. Not when there is anything on the line mind you, but otherwise ...

Still ... We'll have lots of time to decide while we wait for tech to catch up.

I think you can even improve on this. You have NFC tags like with GG but the NFC receiver is in the watch itself. So when you pick up a club it already knows which club it is.
Get rid of the club suggestion (as this would make it non-conforming).

It is basically a marriage of the Apple watch with Zepp and GameGolf ;-)

Valid point. Part of my interest in the single unit is the lack of fiddlyness, I have not used game golf and don't know it's fiddlliness ratio. Having said that ... if the NFC could be integrated into the grip @ install ....

You'd have a really expensive system that you'd have to pay more for every time you got new grips. Oh well.

No the NFC chips in the grips don't cost much (we are talking cents) and you can screw them in and out, so no need to buy new ones when you get a new grip.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
