Ochoa takes over from Sorenstam as number one

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Mexico's Lorena Ochoa replaced Annika Sorenstam as world number one on Monday, the first time the Swede has been dethroned since the official rankings were introduced early last year.

Although no LPGA Tour event was played last week, Ochoa takes over at the top with a points average of 12.84 from 50 events.



Sorenstam, who is expected to be sidelined until the end of next month because of a ruptured disc in her back, drops to second on 12.70.

The Rolex rankings, launched in February 2006, are adjusted on a rolling two-year calendar with each player's points total divided by the number of tournaments played.

Ochoa, who leads this season's LPGA money list with $584,870, had steadily closed the gap on Sorenstam after a string of stirring performances since the start of last year.

The Guadalajara native dominated the 2006 LPGA Tour, winning six titles and becoming only the second player in history to pass the $2 million mark in season earnings with $2,592,872.

She won the Player of the Year award and her scoring average of 69.24 was the fourth lowest in LPGA history.

Ochoa has carried that form into this season, posting five top 10s in six starts, including victory at the Safeway International in March.

The 25-year-old defends her title in this week's Corona Championship in Morelia, Mexico. Ochoa romped to a five-stroke victory over Paraguay's Julieta Granada in last year's tournament.

Seems anticlimactic for things to happen on an off week like this. But the drama was pretty much sucked out of it when Annika announced her injury. Which should by no means demean what Ochoa has managed to do the last two years. She is definately deserving.

I think when it comes to the end of a golfers career, women and men, everyone looks at how many majors you've win. Not how many weeks you were at number one. Right now Ochoa has zero majors and seems to choke when she close to winning one. She needs to worry about that.

Lorena has plenty of time to win some majors. How old is she, 25 or 26? Besides how many multiple major winners are still active on the LPGA? Annika, Karrie Webb, Se-ri Pak, Juli Inkster, and a few others. Not too many, and they are all very experienced players. Lorena really started tearing it up just last year.

 

If, say, in 4 or 5 years Lorena doesn't have a major then she should start worrying a little. But with her work ethic, approach play and putting they are sure to come soon.

hey all:I'll admit ochoa has played great since the start of the '06 season,but i will also admit that with annika out for a month or so with an injury it doesn't seam as dramatic a move for ochoa past annika to the number one ranked player in womans golf.I still think ochoa is a great tallent and carries herself very well both on and off the course.Also don't count annika out i think the fire is still there and she'll be fired up to get back on top.Finnaly i just think that the womens game has a deeper tallent pool now than i can ever remember at least in my lifetime.Just my thoughts :russian_roulette:
