Measuring Putter Head Weight

is there any household items that i can use (other than a regular foot scale... which doesnt work) than i can use to get a ballpark measurement in head weight?

They do sell portable scales like what the post office uses to weigh parcels or what restaurants use to portion out ingredients

Are you removing the heads from the shaft? I assume you are. If so, get yourself a small digital scale that measures down to the 0.5 g. You can find them online, at GolfGalaxy (they are sold out of the GolfWorks section of the store), or most speciality food stores will carry them.

 

I have one and it works great. I love weighing golf components and knowing exactly how much everything weighs (rather than just what the OEM tells you it weighs).

theres another question...

 

the head is still on the shaft and i dont know how heavy the shaft is... so how to i measure only the head weight?

You have to remove the head.

 

However, what putter is it you are weighing? What kind of shaft and grip? If it's something common that might narrow things down a little.

the putter i'm working wih is an old bronze ping Y-blade... i dont know if your familiar with it....

The old Ping shafts were pretty heavy (but I couldn't even guess what they weigh with any accuracy). Without removing the head about all you can do is swingweight it and take a guess from there. What is the length of the putter and what kind of grip does it have?

Fill up a rectangular container with water. The containter/water needs to be tall enough for you to completely submerge the putterhead (without touching the bottom) and without the water overflowing.

 

Put the container with water on a scale. If you have a digital scale that lets you zero it out, then do so now. Otherwise, make a note of the reading on the scale. Then submerge the putter head up to the tip of the shaft, and make a note of the reading on the scale. Take the difference between the two readings. If the readings aren't in grams, then do a conversion.

 

mass in grams = weight in ounces * 28.34 g/ounce

 

This measurement in grams reflects the amount of water displaced by the volume of the putter head. The density of water is roughly 1 g/mL. Therefore, if you know the mass of displaced water in grams, and you also know the volume of the head in mL or cubic centimeters.

 

Now that you know the volume of the head, you can calculate the mass of the head by using the known density of bronze: 8.300 g/mL. So the calculation is as follows:

 

mass of head (in grams) = volume of head (in mL) * 8.3 g/mL
