NYC Neighborhood Help

The Mrs and I will be traveling to NYC for a long weekend at the beginning of August and need some help figuring out what area to rent a place in (using HomeAway or Airbnb). We want to be somewhere walkable with plenty options for eating and drinking (think more low-key bars as opposed to "stand in-line for 30 mins to get a $15 bud light while hearing club music so loud it shakes your ribs). We also are looking for easy access to public transportation. So far I've looked at Upper West Side, SoHo, East Village and Greenwich Village (UWS is the current fav) but wanted to see if anyone had any other advice. Thanks in advance!

Try to find something between 14th street and Houston that is also between 6th Ave and Lafayette/3rd ave. That will put you right in the middle of the East Village, West Village and close to Soho as well. UWS is cool, but will be a bit of a hike to get downtown (if you really want to spend time downtown). The UWS is fine too with subways and lots to do/good neighborhood restaurants, just a bit more involved to get downtown.

After a nice morning or day walking around downtown, try to get to Lupa (make a reservation), either lunch or dinner is great. It's intimate, killer food/wine. I'd actually suggest lunch or early dinner since it can get busy.

Have fun!

Edit: one thing I would not recommend is staying East of 3rd or 2nd ave in the EV. It is a total zoo/frat party on the weekend nights

One more thing! If you find yourself in Soho/Tribeca late night especially and in the mood for a burger in a pub atmospher, check out Walkers.

Looks like we are settling on the West Village/Chelsea neighborhoods for a place to stay. Close to transport to hop around, lots of bars/restaurants and nice areas to walk. And, being that my last name is Walker's, we may have to check it out no matter what. Much appreciated.

Nice, we used to live in Chelsea. There is another good pub, really good for an Irish Breakfast, The Half King on 23rd and 10th. You can eat and then take a walk on the High Line from right there>

In the WV, a killer brunch spot is Extra Virgin (best get there at 11am if its the weekend to avoid waiting)

$15 for a bud light in NYC? Is that like a tuesday night special?
