Driver Shaft Torque

Missing to the right
I'm using a Nike Sumo SQ with a VS Proto Reg flex. I find it almost impossible to turn the ball over and consistently miss the ball to the right. I've been working w/a teaching pro and he said my swing plane is "almost perfect" and I'm just having a hard time squaring up the club face.

Do you guys think I should try a higher torque shaft? Different driver? Any help would be appreciated. I've lost a few brilliant rounds this season because of my driver.

Frank Thomas (Golf Digest) suggests that torque shouldn't even be a huge consideration in choosing a shaft. Here's an excerpt from his June 2006 Q&A section:

Question: In regard to shaft torque specs, can the average player tell the difference between 1.5, 2.8 and 3.0?

Larry Vandenberghe, Tewksbury, Mass.

Answer: Generally the answer is no. With the improvement of graphite shafts, torque (the force required to twist the shaft) is no longer as important. If you have a high swing speed and are using the watermelon-size clubheads, look at the 2.8, but going to a 1.5 will not make a measurable difference. In most cases, 3.0 is fine for the average golfer. I have not seen any sound test data to show that the average golfer will benefit from a very "low torque" shaft.

I think torque has more to do with feel than accuracy but that's just my opinion. Therefore, I would ask your pro what he recommends. If he can't steer you in the right direction, go find a clubfutter who can look both at your swing and your equipment to find the best head/shaft combo for you.

Good luck.

I agree that the best thing to do is get fit. I've tried some of the higher torque shafts and they tend to go right for me as well.

One thing that the fitter noticed during my launch monitor session was that my tempo/transition is very quick. Because of this, I tend to prefer heavier low torque shafts like the Diamana Whiteboard, Speeder 757, and Proforce V2.

Out of the higher torque shafts, the best one I've tried for feel is the Fuji Tour Platform. In my opinion, it's better than the NVS. The Bassara might be good, but I've never tried it.

its more from the flex of the shaft than the torque, torque is more about feel in modern golf shafts. you might want to try a stiff shaft. whats you swing speed and tempo, or how far you hit the ball, real numbers please

I agree. I don't think torque is really that much of a factor in these cases. It could be the shaft is too stiff, in which case most shots will go straight right and not very high. It could also be that the shaft is too soft and you are subconsciously trying to counter this, which can cause high left shots or push slices etc.

It's really hard to say without seeing your swing or having some kind of swing stats.
