Up and down - chipping

How many of you guy's take just one ball and get up and down from everywhere on the chipping / practice green? I play only one ball , mark my ball and go through my pre-shot routine every time on the practice green. I never leave until I can get it up and down from everywhere I try. I see so many people hitting 20-30 chips to the green and never putt them out. I got my drill from Harvey Pennick's Little Red Book!

Funny, I practiced that tonight. There were 9 holes on the practice green. I played 2 balls and had to get up and down from each hole with both balls.

It's a good drill to finish up. One I do a lot now is bring a string or rope which is about 6-8 ft in length and make a circle with it to where I want to land the ball. In this drill, I'm not really concerned about where it ends up but that I'm able to land the ball in that circle from diff lies. Of course, if a string is used, it is less intrusive to the roll of if you do want to do the up and in.

usually on the practice green I'll use 3 balls and try to get them all up and down from the same place, going to different places all around the green. I feel 3 tries from each place gives me the chance to try different things from the same place and immediately correct small mistakes on the next try.

 

I love putting out on the practice green though, gives you either a consequence or reward for a good chip.

For a slightly less time consuming chipping session try this simple modification:

 

Use 3 balls at each hole and only put the ball which is the LONGEST from the hole!

 

This will still add pressure when you've hit to good chips - the third has to get close too!

 

 

 

I do this myself and I have holed 3 chips my last two rounds.. It works!

Practicng chipping and holing out is a good practice. Keep up the good practice habits!
