Powerbilt Citation Forged Irons 1978-79. Advice needed

Recommended Posts

Hey guys just picked up a set of Powerbilt citation irons from a local goodwill. 3-9 irons. They have tru-temper shafts in regular flex. Ive found some info online and it seems they are from 1978-79. Also seems that powerbilt was only selling pro/tour grade clubs at this time. Just wondering if anyone has any info on these or powerbilt itself. Quality, are they really pro/tour grade, how well they play, etc.

Also snagged a Walter hagen "Haig ultra" PW. Seems to be from 1975. Any info on it would be appreciated as well.

Paid $16 for all of them.

Lamar-

What else do you want to know?

In the '70s/early '80s, H&B/PowerBilt had a number of Staff players on Tour, and their equipment was very solid.

Frank Beard, Miller Barber, Gay Brewer, Bobby Nichols, Charlie Coody, and then young Frank Urban (Fuzzy) Zoeller.

These Citation irons are indeed in their 1978 Catalog.

RH ONLY.

Thank you for the response! Was just wondering on quality (which you touched on). And curious if anyone has any experience with them. Really just willing to listen to any info that other members are willing to share. I'm VERY new in "classic" clubs so every bit of info helps. Thanks again for the response.

Those are very nice irons...a great beginning to a classic set. Powerbilt irons remain on my list of potential acquisitions but I'm limited by choice to stumbling onto some as you did. I suspect you could turn them for a profit, but Ebay might tell you it won't be a very large one.

You could also tell us how you hit them, or better yet, how well they play for you. Beyond that, it appears you're about to start on the path that leads into the woods...

I started with H&B irons in the mid sixties and continued through the seventies. I always had an affection for Citation's. Loved the design, cosmetics, feel, everything. Although I never owned this model, I think you got one hell of a good deal. If I were you I would try and locate the matching PW.

Nice find!!!

Awesome to hear! I hit hit the 9 iron once at my house just because I couldnt wait to hit them. Managed to catch it right in the sweet spot and wow did it feel great. Thanks for all the responses so far!

If you can get ahold of the P/B Citation laminates from around that same time frame I believe you will find them to also be very solid and playable. I use them myself with my 75 Staff irons (see sig.)

67 Spalding Top-Flite Professional, Cleveland Classic Persimmon Driver, 3 & 4 Spalding Top-Flite Persimmon Woods, TPM Putter.

Finally got a chance to get out and play. Also added a Pal Joey persimmon 1, and a set of Wilson 1 & 3 woods (.49 cents each). Never hit a persimmon driver/wood nor have I played with classic irons. Only played 9 and managed to hit every fairway with the Pal Joey. Distance was fair but being in the fairway every hole was a serious confidence boost. The irons played very well. Amazing feel and result on good strikes, and surprisingly decent results from mis strikes. For the time being these clubs have found there way into my bag to stay. Hopefully this weekend I can have similar results!

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
