Honma

For Christmas I received the DVD of the 1977 Open Championship. While watching I was amazed to see that the American player, Gaylord Burrows (yes really!) was using Honma clubs. While I know they've been around for a few years i'd no idea they were such a long established brand. Given they've been around for over forty years it's somewhat surprising they've never become mainstream.

They had been around for longer than that.

I remembered my father used to have a few of the Honma clubs from the 60's and early 70's.

Congratulations on receiving one of the best ever golf dvd's,so much better than socks,novelty nude lady tee pegs,golfer's tool with brushes for club cleaning.

In the UK Honma at that time I think were virtually unknown,probably because of the astronomical price,they are still horrendously expensive and I can't quite figure out why people rave about them when they have the spin-welded hosel,surely a one piece head is better,doubly so when it has a forging as made by Mizuno?

I always get the impression that it's a cult following,I had a chance to buy a set silly cheap some 20 years ago but they had shafts like pokers and the longest iron I could hit with any flight was the 7-iron that had the trajectory of a 3-iron!

I have got to think there is something to the spun welded hosel because Miura does that too. Mizuno has their grain flow forging thing. IMHO the Japanese have it down pat in the metal recipes and methods of forging. Homna for years was a status symbol in the Asian countries. Really I have gotten my JDM education here on WRX over the years.

I was of course thinking of Miura when I wrote about spin-welded hosels and apologise for my stupidity.

Interesting thing about many of the older Honma irons is that they are cast, not forged. I've a set of PP737s, which were made in the late Eighties, and they're cast. The feel is a little different, but they're nice looking clubs, and the short irons particularly suit my eye.

The benefit of fusion welded hosel is the control of offset and most importantly the tonage to forge a smaller volume as well as doing multiple strikes to control shape, size and flash. Very little hand work. Therefore fewer workers etc
