Swing aid please

Recommended Posts

Hi folks!

Could you give me some swing tips? Been stuck at 18 hpc for 3 years. I spread the balls all over but mostly pushes. I carry a 7 Iron about 155.

Thanks for the imput nibblelander! I was amazed when I found and tested the No turn cast drill, but I found that the arms first doesn't work that well for me at this time. I made some massive improvements with Paul Wilson body swing videos. Especially effortless swing and relaxed wrist. To many swing thoughts and tightning up.

You see overactive arms with an OTT move?

There are definitely some issues in transition there. You are losing tons of hip depth and coming in very steep:

The big move away from the line that your lower boy makes at the top of the swing is an issue as it brings you closer to the ball and will tend to impact your downswing place. You go back almost perfectly neutral on a steeper plane (good) but then you come down on almost exactly the same steep plane (not good). Because your swing is so upright and steep you actually manage to get the club back on plane by impact, but the problem is that the path you took to get there was so steep that you had to flip the club and stall your rotation significantly to keep the club from burying into the ground behind the ball. This is compounded by the fact that you appear to be trying to create a lot of lag and hang on to your wrist angles. This would be fine if you weren't so steep, but since you are it makes trying to time NOT burying into the club that much harder.

This is where a bulk of your inconsistency is going to come from in that not only are you tryin to time hitting a ball off the ground, but you're also trying to time not burying the clubhead. Professional level consistency comes from reducing as much as possible elements that require extra timing. To do that I would recommend first working on keeping your hips back. At the top of the swing you straighten up and lose hip depth which could be in response to your backswing being too long or another balance issue. From there you will have both the room and the balance to start your transition by driving the lower body which will allow you to shallow your hands/arms and get on plane much sooner. This will then allow you to continue rotating correctly without having to stall and flip to keep from burying the club.

How you go about doing this is the hard part, and usually it is best to have a coach/teacher. If you want to try it on your own though, I recommend starting with 1/2 and 3/4 shots. You can video yourself from a stationary position in slow motion (if possible) and check these positions I have pointed out. Feel free to post them here as well if you're not sure what you're looking for. 👍

Wow fantasticly helpfull Valtiel! There are no coaches around here so I have filmed myself during winter and watched a million youtube videos. I actually caught this early on, but I'm having a hard time correcting it. I think it's about keeping focus and only do halfswings for a while. This is called early extension (ee backswing) right?

You're welcome! Yes this would be a type of early extension which would basically be defined as any movement of the hips forward and/or straightening of the spine angle prior to impact. They usually go hand in hand. The most common place this occurs is on the way down to the ball from the top of the swing, but in your case it is a position you are sort of "setting up" at the top of your backswing that then gets you very steep and stuck on the way down:

You can see above that your pelvis comes forward, your spine straightens a bit, and your head comes up. It feels to me like your backswing sort of "pulls' you up into this position a bit, but that is just a guess on my part. Either way it is this extension that without immediate compensation puts you in a crowded and steep position in your downswing. Monte talks about it in this video as well if you hadn't found this one yet:

Last swing today. Felt a little tired especially in the legs. This leads to an armsy swing losing connection to the ground. I feel like I hit and then rotate. The right leg looks to straight before impact but I believe there's less early extension. Still to steep?

Yeah i'd say your analysis is spot on there. Your hips look like they are moving in slow motion compared to your arms which are traveling a massive distance while your hips are barely moving at all. You want to work towards reversing that, because you're basically just swinging with your arms as you said.

You're maintaining your depth now which is good though. Would it be possible to get a face on video?
