I occasionally have a problem of being laid off at the top too. A good drill to help me get the feeling of having the club point parallel to the target line is: at address, point the shaft straight up and keep your arms straight, then just turn (like a backswing, also shifting your weight) and get the feeling of having the club in the correct position at the top.

Let's be clear about definitions because sometimes we don't all speak the same language. Laid off is when the clubshaft points left of the target at the top of the backswing for a right hander (looking Down the line). If the clubshaft is short of parallel (to the ground), it will be laid off if you are on plane and that would be perfect even though it would appear laid off. Short of parallel is not a "problem." Heck, look how far JB Holmes can bomb it and he doesn't even get to parallel with driver.

If you are parallel (to the ground) and laid off, it can be due to a few of things (or combination thereof):

1. Overrotation of the forearms

2. Bowed left wrist at the top

3. Extremely flat arm swing with insufficient (less than 90 deg.) right elbow flexion (very rare case)

Thanks, Hoganfan. That's what I was getting at with my original querstion near the top of this thread. Many of us single plane swingers are laid off and this is just fine - but our shaft never gets parallel to the ground either which is the key point you make. Being laid off is not necessarily a bad thing by itself - depends on ball flight and also on swing style.

Won't it apprear to be laid off ( whee you're actually not ) if you're a single plan player and not able to fully rotate the torso ( completion of the back swing ) ?

It shouldn't be a problem? Not all top players have a near perfect swing on the tour.
