Current set up.

 

A little about me. I practice more than I play, as in Japan golf is an all day event and I have two young daughters. The range near my house, Takao Golf Club (Kyoto), has top tracer and I regularly get on that and do the virtual golf and I have to say it keeps the game in decent enough shape. Been able to average under 80 (on real courses) despite playing less than 10 times a year and absolutely wrecking my right wrist a year and a half ago ( Colle's fracture, I think it was).

 

BGW (before golfwrx), I had the same set up year in year out. I have a few mainstay's like the irons, the wedges and the driver. The fairways the next spot are always getting a go, looking for some magic. Between 230 and 250 seems to be where that happens.

 

Thought I might have finally got in nailed down with the 21 degree cally in the pic. It has a ad di 95 hybrid shaft at 39.5." Shaft kind of does what it promises mid high, elevates easily. 4 iron is one of the most consistent spots in my bag (irons all x100). The 2 iron in the picture is also x100, but It feels pretty harsh if you miss it just a hair. I seem to do pretty well with drill sergeants for clubs, but this deuce might be a bridge too far. Might tweak it a little bit, throw on a nicer grip and maybe add a little loft and see if that does the trick.

 

The biggest surprise this year has been the Tourstage x-fw 14' with ad bb 7x. It might kick driver out of the bag it's that hot. I was shocked to see it go over 3 bills twice in my last session. I need something that can go 270-275 at a lot of courses here. Over 300 is not really all that helpful if it isn't string straight... But, so far in testing I don't hit anything straighter. I've had a few three woods in my life that felt like home - an old Hogan apex and a Cally s2h2 (my last Callaway before the UT). Had some great and memorable rounds with just those 3 woods and I am kind of getting that vibe again.

 

I have a few other ideas to fill that 230-250 spot... Well, actually one. But, that's all it takes. I'll keep you posted.

That 230-250 spot is the hardest part of the bag to figure out imo. It's why you see guys like Brooks who keeps the same driving iron for years. Nice bag.

Was looking at one of these at 20.5 at the same time I was looking at the Callaway. Definitely still a possibility. It has a similar compact face to the MR-23 Cbs and not a lot of offset. Felt pretty nice with a Diamana Thump i115.

Pretty jacked about the Tourstage, so I thought I'd put up some numbers. You may notice a wide variance in ball speed in each of the charts. I hit some with Bridgestone balls right out of the sleeve - quite the jump up.

 

The size of the TS 3w is different for me. I typically used a little smaller club head, but there is no denying how much confidence I have when I set this bad boy behind the ball. Add a shaft, in the BB that I don't think I can over power.

Well golf season is kind of coming into focus now. The Kyoto Prefectural Golf Association announced the schedule for the 2024 season and the wrap up event for 2023 is March 11th at Highashi (East) Joyo Country Club. Just go sent an information package about it. Looks to be a pretty strict country club with mandatory blazers at check in and no funny stuff with shorts (they must be a certain length)... I am 6 points back of first place (in a tie for 2nd place).

 

My last even was in November. I taken a good few months break from hitting golf balls in order to save a little cash and set up a home gym (practice ranges here are at least $20 a session and I don't think it's all that worth while to hit balls a couple times a month, so I've spent more time at home chipping and working on my swing without hitting balls. Got the idea from Hal Sutton. Thanks, Hal!

 

Went out for a practice round on Wednesday at a (relatively) cheap river side track between Kyoto and Osaka. I walked on and played 18 in about 3 hours. Forgot my putter for the first 9, struck the ball really really well. I hit 11 GIR and just about every fairway. Unfortunately when I did miss it a little I hit one OB, one in a pond and another in a deep fairway bunker. Still, I was only 4 over par. Only one birdie too. Waited until the last hole....
