Hip slide on downswing, help!

One thing that I have been fighting for years is a overactive hip slide on the downswing. I get to the top just fine and then, to start my down swing pivot, instead of just a small hip bump towards the target my hips keep moving forward until my left hip is almost outside of my left foot before I begin to clear my hips. What happens as a result is my lead shoulder gets too far ahead of the ball and in order to hit the ball I end up at impact with a slightly bent left arm, and inconsistent ball striking.

 

Are there any drills to help me stop this overactive hip slide?

Two things you can try with your setup are a wider stance and flaring your left foot a little so instead of your toes pointing in front of you, they point about 45 degrees to the left.

 

As for a drill, if you have an old broken club or spare shaft, put it in the ground just outside the left side of your left foot, and hit a shot. Try not to hit the the shaft with your body on the follow through. To do this, you will have to turn your hips instead of sliding them. I did this drill a few years ago and it really helped.
