What is Pivot?

I see this word being thrown around a lot over here but I don't think all of you are referring to the same thing when you say "Pivot"

 

So how would you define pivot in the golf swing?

Everything except your arms.

 

The core of the pivot include the shoulders and hips.

I thought the pivot was the point your body turned around. For example, in the back swing your pivot is the right foot as you load that side of your body, while in the downswing, the ball of your left foot becomes the pivot. In each case, the body turns around those points.

You are very wise grasshopper. For you are correct when you say there is many definitions of the word pivot.

 

Webster says

 

1: a shaft or pin on which something turns

2 a: a person, thing, or factor having a major or central role, function, or effect b: a key player or position; specifically : an offensive position of a basketball player standing usually with back to the basket to relay passes, shoot, or provide a screen for teammates

3: the action of pivoting; especially : the action in basketball of stepping with one foot while keeping the other foot at its point of contact with the floor

 

 

I do not know that any of these describe what we talk about in the golf swing.

 

I always think of the pivot as the turning of the shoulders and the hips that causes a transfer of weight. As in the pivot turns the body and loads the right side.

 

Then again what the hell do I know Webster is still looking for a pin. :black eye:

Here are the definitions found in The Golfing Machine (a book written by Homer Kelly). You may or may not be interested in this. I am just posting in case anyone is interested. I'm not saying these are the only definitions.

 

PIVOT

Example – revolving door.

Mechanical– That motion of a body moving around a center point.

Golf – A multiple universal-joint assembly between the Stationary Head and the Stationary Feet holding the Clubshaft “On Plane” by positioning and adjusting the Lever Assembly, through the #3 Accumulator, as directed by the Right Forearm.

 

PIVOT CENTER

Example thetherball pole.

Mechanical– The point on which an assembly is suspended or erected to stabilize and limit that assembly’s possible travel – the Hinge Pin.

Golf – Some point on the body kept stationary throughout the Stroke, to stabilize the motion.
