Is the internet someplace to seek golf instruction?

Recommended Posts

The following is in no way intended as criticism of anyone; just illustrating the inconsistencies that can't help but confuse those who want to improve.

Received an email from Martin Chuck (someone I really respect) yesterday touting his new training aid that prevents ulnar deviation on the downswing. States it helps those who are too shallow and too steep and will help maintain posture. Monte (someone I really respect) posts an Instagram today depicting a No Turn Wrist Hinge Drill that in part emphasizes ulnar deviation in the downswing.

How to resolve? I'd say it's only possible if you receive 1:1 instruction.

I'm 2.5 years into the Rebellion Golf instruction (The Efficient Swing, No Turn Cast & Early Extension videos exclusively).  I've never played better, understand what I'm trying to accomplish in the swing and why, and it's easy to understand (takes a little work to execute - at first the changes were like trying to pat my head and rub my belly).

Also, I feel like I'm swinging with such little effort and getting the best distance of my life.

All this and I'm really not playing or practicing that much.  When I do, I know what I'm trying to accomplish in the swing.  I'm 52 and kept pace with 24 year olds the last two weeks distance-wise.  I shot 82 and 83 in my last two rounds on tough, unfamiliar courses.  At least 6 3-putts each round.  I could not get comfortable with the slow green speeds, which was frustrating.  But the last 54 holes have been penalty free and 1 golf ball.

What's the point?  That online instruction has been very successful for me.  I've never had an "in person" instructor get me to that point.  Or diagnose, change, suggest some swing flaws that I was able to diagnose and change through this course of instruction.

My observation:  you need a course of instruction that capitalizes on the "building block" theory of learning and doesn't isolate a certain move.  How your entire body moves in relation to the club is very important.

Did the email really say that? How are you supposed to get the clubhead down to the ball if you don't UD?

Even with all the advances in equipment and state of the art teaching technology handicaps have only come down less than 2 strokes in the past 25 years according to the USGA.

Even Dr. Kwon, Sasho, Nesbit and some of the other PhD's can't come to a consensus on the best way to efficiently apply energy to a golf ball.

Again, not a criticism of Martin Chuck or anyone else. Just pointing out how easy it is to get confused by the many seemingly opposite recommendations when it comes to golf instruction. This is just one example to illustrate this. Another common example - Leave arms up at start of downswing vs start downswing with arms. Following one program from a single online instructor might limit inconsistencies, but I think working with someone who can see what you're actually doing would avoid some of this. Not all, but some.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
