would appreciate input on completing this mixed set of Hogans

ok, first off this is all @Jiggered 's "fault" 🤣 I rewatched his video where he took clubs from different makers & times to make a set, then played them (it's a great video btw). I was in my orphan Hogan club bin & wondered if I could do the same - make up a set of Hogan's? Here's the result:

2iron - '78 copper Medallion, missing shaft band;

3iron - '84 PC, AMF Apex (missing flex#);

4iron - '87 Radial, AMF Apex (missing flex#);

5iron - '99 Apex, Apex frequency matched 4 (shaft cut down for youth?);

6iron - '88 Redline, Apex 4;

7iron - '75 Producer, AMF Apex 2;

8iron - '99 Apex, Apex frequency matched 4 (shaft cut down for youth?);

9iron - '99 Apex, shaft band unreadable (shaft cut down for youth?);

E       - '86 Magnum, missing shaft band;

SW    - '61(?) Power Thrust, TT Pro Fit shaft (missing flex#).

Putter - MacGregor Ben Hogan Texan 1322 pyratone shaft w/leather grip.

Driver - Sunburst black w/4 screw inverted red Y insert, no shaft band;

4 wood - Sunburst clear w/4 srew inverted red Y insert, no shaft band.

{all grips, except Putter, are after-market of various makes]

So, my question revolves around an "appropriate" 1 iron and Lob wedge. All the Hogan 1 irons I have are with their own sets & I'm not sure that any pre-1999 Hogans included a Lob wedge.
Yesterday, I was in storage looking for 1 irons & Lob wedges of various makers that appealed to me....that is what the pictures are.

Oh, I did come across a couple/3 surprises, which I tacked on at the end.

Any thoughts on the 1 iron & Lob wedge that could fit it?

Thanks for getting this far.

the 1 irons

1irons#2.jpg

that USG Sceptre stainless, just below the MT, has a TT Aluminum Metor shaft & on the hosel where the "crimping" marks would normally be, it's incised "Hand Crafted" (I can find no info on this club);

I'm wondering if the Arnold Palmer 1 iron is when PGA/First Flight bought back the Palmer company, the back is kinda sorta reminiscent of their FTD line, but nothing in Maltby's descriptions match this one;

1irons#3.jpg

these both have brown pyratone shafts & lovely leather grips ending in wood plugs. I am interested in knowing more about the top 1iron.

Again I was watching @Jiggered video where he describes that the info inside the circle was where the club was "finished" & the Golf Club Course...so is the intertwining SR or RS the cleek mark?

the wedges

the kinda sorta surprises

puttrs:chip#1.jpg

The Dynacast putter has a "designed by" w/what looks like a partial signature of Chi Chi Rodriquez (I checked & it looks like the first bit fits, but the rest is ???.

Searched for the company & found on in Australia. I emailed them w/question....maybe they'll answer.

puttrs:chip#2.JPG

yes, part of the real surprise is the middle club - a Wilson swan neck chipper from somewhere in the '30s I think.

the other putter kinda sorta reminded me of the putter that was asked about earlier this week, it just has a smaller flange.

the REAL surprise is this one - a Crosby Direct Line putter from the '30s for sure. I found a couple on line (& in a book on antique golf clubs) but they were

described as "stainless steel" shafts...this putter has a black pyratone shaft that is rather ratty near the hosel & the grip...

Again, thanks for looking this far.....

  • 4 weeks later...

not sure if any might read this...but just an update -
I came across a '62 Hogan Power Thrust 1 iron, also a '58 Saber utility wedge.
I guess I'll try the Beckley Ralston Trapshooter, loft is around 60* (I think)...just have to take off the jumbo grip & regrip w/a standard grip.

If anyone reading this far...how would I go about removing the varnish while leaving any decals in place?

After cleaning, regripping when needed & such...ready to play, whenever Occupational Therapy gives the ok - looking like early next Spring.

So, to kill time - put together a totally mismatched set of clubs, who cares what makers....and @Jiggered , this is all your fault again 😂 after watching & rewatching your vids of playing w/totally different clubs as a set

🥸 🙃🤣

I love the  Crosby Direct Line! That is really cool, I need something to line up my putts!

Would a Sure Out be Lob enough? I doubt they are more than 57 degrees, but I love mine.

Isn’t there some kind of modern putter involving something similar - like a slotline putter?

I have a number of ‘Sure Out’ wedges (& 1 ‘Sure On’ wedge)….but they are as difficult to date as the ‘Special SI’ wedges & you’re correct, they are ~56*
The Trapshooter should be fun…or any lob wedge, I am contrary enough to try the Goldsmith lob wedge…just cuz far too many look down their noses at component store lines. 🤣

My favorite part of this post is that you threw in the Cleveland VAS 1 iron.  As if that club would belong in any bag!

I wonder if you’ve ever played any VAS? If you haven’t, I’d suggest you watch the Vintage Golfer on YT thingie…he reviewed on, made rather disparaging remarks till he actually hit one on the range.

As for me, I don’t give a rat’s rear what it LOOKS like - it HOW it plays that is my bottom line. I have no problem with putting that club in my bag - & I put a Ping DOC-17 in the bag also.

My comments were completely tongue-in-cheek.  I hope that came across.  Those VAS irons are notorious punching bags.  Unfortunately, I've never had a chance to hit one.  I would jump at the chance if it presented itself.  Especially a one iron!

But it does look comical among your other one irons.

It's difficult for "tongue-in-cheek" to come across as such....the main reason VAS irons became "notorious punching bags" was their "looks", not their play.
I'm probably over-sensitive about players who comment on "looks" rather than "play....happens more on other forums than on this one....

If I ever run into a VAS iron cheap and local you better believe im buying it. Pavin won his US open in the 90s with them! My JV golf coach always spoke highly of Pavin and what that win meant to him. At the time that statement was "whatever" to my young mind, but now Im so hooked on golf lore I get why coach loved it.
