Winter Swing Overhaul, suggestions welcome

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

New to this forum and I am looking for suggestions on changing my swing this offseason.  For background I started golfing 4 years ago and really started taking it more seriously the last two years.  Worked my way down to a high single digit and did manage to break 80 a few times this year...that's a first for me.  Feels like my handicap is a fraud with how poorly I can play at times lol.

I really struggle on the tee box and have consistency issues directionally with my irons.  I don't even track FIR's, I just track how many penalty strokes I take in a round off the tee box.  It can even be bad with my 3 wood, or hybrid as I have a higher swing speed.  This offseason I want to work on my takeaway, and also understand the transition better.  Not sure if I reverse pivot, but I seem to get all of my clubs across the line and get flippy with my clubs.  Usually miss is a huge pull draw and push cut.  Days where timing is on I can play decent golf, but this is far and few between.  Looking to build a swing this offseason that is more consistent and controls the club face better.  I have some iron, driver and wedge videos below.

All thoughts are welcome, I have a nice play to practice indoors in the winter and really want to utilize this offseason to change my mechanics and have a swing that keeps the ball in play more consistently.

Thanks

I did something similar last winter and went from a 9 index to a 5.  I didn't have time to practice short game this past summer (bc my focus was only on swing change), so that 5 could've probably been a 3 or a 4 with short game practice.

The most important thing is to find a good instructor and take multiple lessons over the winter.  Then, practice daily between the lessons (slow motion swings, on video, etc.).  In my situation, I took a lesson last January and a second lesson in April.  Worked daily on making the changes and it obviously worked.  In hindsight, I should've done my first lesson in November to give more time to make the changes.  Without an instructor, I would've just been wasting time and watching YouTube swing videos.

A couple things.

1. Ball position is too far back. Do you hit a lot of thins or low shots? If you move the ball closer to your front foot, the ball will get more in the air.

2. It looks like at set up you are reaching a bit. Try and keep your weight on the balls of your feet then set the club down. Your weight just looks over your toes because the ball is far away from you. On the wedge it looks OK. A good test is if you have space for your spread-out hand between the butt of the club and your belly button.

3. You have a backswing start that pulls the club way behind you. Work on lifting the club up to start the backswing. The turn will get the club deep.

4. You have a very late wrist set, which makes the club go across the line at the top of the backswing. This brings the club OTT and gives you a very open face. Notice how you hit the ball off of the heel in the driver shot.

I would simply have you work on set up and starting the club back better at the beginning of the backswing. You can work on Monte's no turn backswing. That should help you get earlier wrist hinge and keep the club from getting sucked inside.
