Merry X'Mas and a Happy 2024 folks. Here's another hint.

Recommended Posts

Well hello there. Long time no see. Since many people here think I'm some kinda troll, so I won't bother you guys too long...

So here goes....

Find a way to reach the top of the backswing that allows for these following characteristics of the transition and downswing....

1) From the top, you can spin your hips freely or violently(what have you) with no sense of lateral move towards the target but still able to transfer the weight forward automatically (maybe cause the lateral move might've already happen before you reach the top? 😜 )

2) Here's the trick though... you must be able to spin the hips so the trail shoulder kinda follows the hip down n outward but the clubhead does not shoot forward with your trail shoulder. It somehow moves away instead. Meaning once you spin the hips, the clubhead shoots away(blue arrow and circle). If it shoots outside(red arrow), sorry folks then you haven't got the Hogan backswing. Or to make it more simple. The shaft flattens and not steepens.... mind you keep in mind "you must simply spin the hips and all this happens on it's own. Nothing more nothing less. If you try to manipulate the path in anyway with your hands or shoulders or the way you sit down... then it's not Hogan.

3) If you manage to designed a backswing that let's you experience the above goodness. You're half way there. It will feel as though the butt of the grip keeps shooting towards the sky and the clubhead is always "behind you" if you don't release the club. Like Moe once said in his clinic. That it keeps going forever.

4) Then all that's left is the "hogan release".

Happy holiday folks and may 2024 bring joy and happiness to you all.

Happy new year Swaggy G. Best holiday gift ever!

1) I think a little sway is good? I kind of figured out for myself if I sway back a little in the backswing, in transition I'll sway a little forward to recenter (weight transfer forward), it'll pull my arms down automatically with my body. It's very hard to pull the handle or jab at the ball anymore. It's a rhythm thing but not a hard thing to do. Like if I were to reverse pivot instead, to recenter in transition I'd need to shift weight to the right, and the only way to bring the club to the ball is to pull the arms down. And then my arms win the race. Although this isn't anything ground breaking though. But it's given me a very pivot driven, passive face swing. I do f up sometimes when I try to force too much weight forward. Pretty zeroed out with path but this mistakes pushes my path 1* to the right with an open face.

2) What's happening are you just describing shallowing? I'm still re-arranging my brain cells from NYE. But if I keep my arms going up forever as a feel as I'm starting to sway forward, it shallows the club pretty nicely without doing anything. Again nothing groundbreaking. Gankas says it all the time. But he says 1) is optional and definitely prefers a centered swing. Even says a reverse pivot can work IIRC.

Not sure I really feel 3). Will have to see tomorrow. But club is shallow to where it's near perpendicular to my back at P5ish though.

Hey Teddy, hope all is good

1) Yes, sway is not only good but crucial for this swing style. It sets you up for the automated shift like you described.

2) Automated shallowing with no effort to "drop the club into the slot" manually is what I'm describing. If you "simply spin the hips" in most traditional top of the backswing position the shoulders, arms hands and club will shoot outward. But in Hogan's backswing once at the top, nothing is required other than spinning the hips to give the hitting unit a "free ride".

3) It's a feel not real thing and it is just half of the equation. The other is how to hit the ball from this position.

Cheers Teddy and keep digging.. I know you'll get there!

Every time this guy posts, I think of this.

Quite the opposite really. I'm more like the lucky moron who was obsessed and stubborn enough to try out all the combos randomly till something clicked before making sense of the whole thing. Happy 2024 to you and happy golfing sir.

Thanks, hope so! Went away from trying to figure this out and stick more to what I could understand, but your posts kick-started my curiosity again. It's like I could stick to what I know and follow a reputable coach and get quite good. Or take a gamble on this and potentially get really really good. Think it's a no-brainer.
