? on a Spalding putter

Recommended Posts

Came across this club...it is a "pure" blade style putter, I prefer this style. I remember from one of @Jiggered videos, that he said when Spalding had their factory in the UK, that the cleek mark was an anvil. So my question is - is this putter from that time in the UK or was Spalding using an old cleek mark on a US made putter?
The shaft has no band, the grip is in great shape w/that flattened fron part. I do have a couple of the 'Calmity Jane' putters (for sure at least one is pyratoned) & the heads look similar.

I've never seen that model of Calamity Jane putter before and can't say if it's a UK model or not.

The grip could hold a clue, is it an Avon?  If so then it could be British.

Here's a 1930s British anvil.

It's not all about the score.

I haven't seen that version either, so unlikely to be UK production.

The grip is Golf Pride Traction Action.

That type of smooth face induces me to think 1950s early 60s US Spalding (or maybe Spaulding) at a time when cheaper remakes were quite commonplace. I imagine they would have needed a licence from the Bobby Jones Foundation although Spalding might have had a pass on that.

A collection of all the different issues of Calamity Jane would be a worthwhile endeavour.

Jones joined Spalding (never Spaulding) as a consultant in 1931, and millions of Jones branded clubs were produced from that time up until about 1972 or so, right around the time of his death.  There are currently over 300 listings for them on Ebay, even a set with aluminum (or aluminium for our UK friends!) shafts.

More recent clubs with Jones' name on them such as those made by Callaway or the ones designed by Jesse Ortiz no doubt had to be licensed from something, as well as the clothing line that if I'm not mistaken still exists.

The general observation seems to be that the US version of Spalding is most commonly rendered as 'Spaulding'.

I tried to avoid confusion and seemingly failed.

gotta agree w/Shallowface...."never Spaulding" (I do admit adding the "u" in my ignorance, till I started getting interested in the history of clubs)

Oh, perhaps the mistake is made in the phonetically spelling of Spalding...it sure sounds like the "u" should be in there

thanks for the pic...they sure look alike. So if a company registers a cleek mark in the UK, does that mean they have the rights to use in the USA whenever they wish?

just for giggles....here's a modern Robert T Jone Jr hickory shafted putter - St Andrews Golf & the shaft has "Heritage Golf St Andrews Scotland" burnt into shaft near grip (the face of the putter is frosted in the strike area)

Both versions are used when it comes to surnames.

But there's no "u" on any of those golf clubs.  Or basketballs or baseballs or anything else they made, which was a lot.

I believe it was in Brooklyn NY where they invented a game called stickball, similar to baseball except it is played in the streets and they hit a small ball made of pink rubber with a broomstick.  Spalding still makes those balls, but they are referred to as "Spaldeens."

I know about this one.

Heritage Golf (later to become 'The St Andrews Golf Co, now at Largo Ward) was owned by Barry Kerr who did have, and paid for, the rights from the Bobby Jones Foundation or whatever it was accurately called. Whether they were transferred to StagCo with the change of ownership I couldn't say.

Barry Kerr and Heritage Golf were very highly regarded in St Andrews and made high end replicas. Barry even made replicas to cover for valuable originals owned by the major Edinburgh founding Golf Clubs so the former could be displayed while the originals were kept in vaults. He showed me, and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Also, fwiw, Bronty Golf of Pudsey, West Yorkshire UK had the rights to use Calamity Jane from the same Bobby Jones authority, and is a scarcity to look out for when compiling a collection.

For interest, the StagCo mentioned above have the UK rights to use the 'Tom Stewart name and cleekmark on their clubs which they can sell worldwide.

They did not have a filing valid in the USA, so Louisville Golf being made aware of this filed their own Tom Stewart claim in the USA. The story of how this came about is not very savoury, but that's business.

Don't know about Brooklyn or even exactly when....but we played "stickball" in the early '50s over in Northern NJ, played w/any small ball, usually a tennis ball if memory serves (never saw a pink one). If you've ever watched the "Our Gang" movies, I think there were scenes where they played some kind of "stickball"....fun memories

I'd never seen them in any color other than pink, but when I went to look for these pictures I see they now make them in a variety of colors and even have them with team logos.
