Not sure how to manage gapping in my set.

Recommended Posts

I feel like the gapping with my set isn’t great. Not sure how to change though……

I’m a 1.6 hcp, iron play is my biggest weakness. Driving and putting save me a lot of the time…… Set is as follows:

G430 LST Ventus Black 6 x

Cobra King Tec 2 hybrid

TSr3 4 hybrid

4-9 T100s

46, 50, 54, 58 Vokey SM9

Yardages (Averages of 20 shots on GC Quad)

D  296 Carry 314 Total 174 ball speed 14.8 launch 1970 spin

2h 261 Carry 279 Total 152 ball speed 17 launch 3082 spin

4h 247 Carry 255 Total 148 ball speed 15 Launch 3170 spin

4i 216 carry 238 total 136 ball speed 13 launch 3650 spin

5i 214 carry 228 total 135 ball speed 15 launch 3475 spin

6i 199 carry 205 total 131 ball speed 17 launch 4595 spin

7i 187 carry 190 total 124 ball speed 18 launch 4525 spin

8i 165 carry 168 total 118 ball speed 18 launch 6775 spin

9i 152 carry 156 total 111 ball speed 21 launch 7375 spin

PW 132 carry 135 total 99 ball speed 27 launch 7985 spin

GW 117 carry 119 total 92 ball speed 26 launch 8800 spin

SW 111 carry 112 total 91 ball speed 27 launch 9998 spin

LW 98 carry 99 total 82 ball speed 27 launch 10800 spin

I don’t like the bottom end of the bag but don’t really know what to do….. Open to suggestions.

Considering your 9 iron on your T100S irons is 40* and your Vokey PW is 46* I would try to tighten up that gap first. Ideally we want 4-6* between wedges but when going from a set wedge or in your case 9 iron I try to keep it around 4*, mainly because specialty wedges typically spin more than an iron and there is a slight difference in how they will fly. Do you have the set PW (its 44*) or try to bend the Vokey to 44*. That is where I would start. I also do not like that the 4 and 5 iron are basically the same carry, I would look at a Utility iron to replace the 4 iron. Something to get you more carry and height.

I tend to hit the 4i off the tee exclusively, so it tends to go higher and longer than the numbers here but I get what you’re saying.

The gapping between PW & 9i is a bigger issue for sure. I’ve got the set PW but playing that just screws up my PW-GW gap. I guess maybe going PW-46-50-54-58 and dumping the 4i entirely might be an option……

Remember we want to keep our wedges 4-6* apart. I would not go with both the PW and 46* vokey!! I would go with the set PW and have it bent 1* weak and then have your 50* bent to 49*.  If you do that then your lofts would be 9 iron 40*, PW at 45*, your 50 at 49*, 54* and 58*.  This would tighten up your gaps, especially when going from set PW to the vokey

If it was me I’d add some loft to the 4H and try to get it in the 230-235 carry range. Other option would be to weaken your irons to get closer to that 12-15 yards of the ideal gaps typically. I personally could care less about total distance. I’d start with the wedges and if those are the carry numbers you like them weaken your 9 iron and adjust from there so you have 3-5* gaps between your irons. Seems like if you weaken the 5-9 irons you could gap this set really nicely.

if you like the PW carrying 132 then 9 iron should carry roughly 145 give or take. Then 8 iron would be roughly 158, 7 iron 171, 6 iron 184, 5 iron 197 and 4 iron you could leave as is or weaken and have it carry 210. All depends on the gaps you’re comfortable with but 12-15 would be ideal. The gap between your 7-8 irons is 22 yards currently that’s a big gap and your 4-5 irons essentially do the same exact thing.

This is what works for me:

Dr- 280

4wd - 255

7wd- 235

4H - 215-220

6 iron - 200

7 iron - 185

8 iron - 167

9 iron - 152

PW - 138

50 - 125

54 - 112

58 - 100

62 - always used on partial shots

Right. Thanks! I’ll get them worked on today and see what comes out of it.

Personally, I think you could do with adding 500rpms of spin, probably to every club. You could probably do that with a ball change and adding 1 degree of loft. Your spin numbers look low, especially in the mid irons even if you take in to consideration that you may have been playing from a mat. I think it would help your approach play a lot.

Do you have the same shafts in your wedges as your irons?

Your bag looks like it has been built for a launch monitor rather than for the course based on those numbers.
