Northwest LA / Conejo Valley Private Clubs?

Recommended Posts

We are considering a move from the Westside of LA up to the Calabasas/Westlake/Thousand Oaks area and curious if anyone has any experience with any of the private clubs up there?

I'm aware of Sherwood CC, North Ranch CC and Calabasas CC but I'm sure there are others as well! Proximity to wherever we end up landing would be near the top of my list of priorities but any other info is good to know as well.

For example, my understanding is that while Sherwood is expensive, it isn't that hard to join as long as you are willing to pay the cost -- which is certainly a welcome change from some of the clubs that are convenient to our current place (Bel Air, LACC, Brentwood, etc.) if true.

Had a buddy play sunset hills and while short (~6100 yards) he didn’t hate it. No idea what it costs

wood ranch gc - know nothing about them

would avoid calabasas cc; crowded, slow, course is gimmicky/target golf, members are a*******.

Don’t know much about Woodland Hills cc but if I’m getting emails that they’re looking for members in this golf environment that doesn’t feel like a good sign

I’ve given up on the private golf dream in LA I’ll keep sweating it at the LA city courses and sprinkle in drives to the desert every few weeks

I can offer some perspective on this as someone who has played most of these courses and has had memberships at a few over the years.  Good luck in your search!

Sunset Hills CC: Decent course but short, poor practice facilities, inexpensive, mediocre but dated facilities and older demographic

colloquialism indicator: The everyman's club

Calabasas CC: Decent course, decent practice facilities and amenities, affordable/pricey, entitled membership

colloquialism indicator: The douchebag club

Woodland Hills CC: Decent fun course, poor practice facilities, serviceable but dated amenities, affordable, good crowd

colloquialism indicator: The middle America club

North Ranch CC: Great course, great practice facilities, tons of amenities, pricey/expensive (but easy to get in), status conscious crowd

colloquialism indicator: The stereotypical "wealthy" club

Sherwood CC: World class course, great practice facilities and amenities, ultra expensive (but easy to get in)

colloquialism indicator: The elite top 50 America club

Wood Ranch GC: Pro level course, great practice facilities and clubhouse, golf only so no other amenities, affordable/upscale

colloquialism indicator: The men's real golf club

As far as looking for members, the reality is everyone in the private club industry is (whether they admit it or not) just a matter of how desperately they need them.  Generally speaking the more information they readily provide the more they need you and your money, the less they readily provide the less they need you and your money.  Finally, if you need to ask and they provide nothing then they do not need anyone and you are not getting in unless a member has reached out to you personally.
