Setting the Club

OK, somehow I have gotten in a habit of not setting the club. Halfway thru the swing, I still don't have the club at 90* to my left arm. When I make a conscious effort to set, I end up tightening up the forearms and being very stiff. In turn I hit the ball thin.

 

Does anybody have any suggetions or drills for help setting the club?

The tightness related to your attempt to set the club sounds to me like you are trying too hard when setting and have got too much overall tension in your arms and your grip.

 

To set the club when going back you want to feel as though once the club has passed the 8 o'clock position that you push down with the pad of the left hand as you pull up with the middle 2 fingers of the right hand.

 

2 great drills are the split hand drill where you plit the hands approximately 4 inches apart on the club and you turn away in the 1st move keeping the distance that the arms are relative to the body from the address position exactly the same then as you hit the 8 o'clock position and the club is still in front of you begin to press down with the left hand and pull up with the right this will give you the feeling.............to help alieviate the tension and feel the cocking of the club set up and have the clubhead ahead of the hands with the left wrist cupped and the right wrist flat, from here you can start to turn the body away and you will feel the club lagging behind your hands. As the swing goes past 8 o'clock physics will take over and due to the relaxed nature of you wrists you will get a great cocking action as the right arm bends the club will be at 90 degrees to the left arm.......this is a great drill if you also rotate the arms too early as it helps to stop this occuring. ;)

If your left hand grip is weak, that can make setting the club more difficult also.
