Unleashing the EMB

Ive had the EPON 10.5 EMB on the shelf for awhile as I go thru my annual ritual of driver testing. Well its back in my A BAG. I had not used the EMB since early spring as I was using the MD shafted EPON AF101 as my primary driver and trying testing just about anything out there.

One aspect that doesnt get discussed much in all of the equipment forums is the ball clubhead dynamic. There are certain clubhead and ball combinations that are pure magic and will push the envelope to max out distance assuming of course that the shaft is a proper fit (stating the obvious).

Ive discovered a few magic combos the last 2 years.

The Cally HX tour and the Epon 460Z / AF101,

HX HOT and EXOTIC XCG.

Well Ive discovered a new benchmark for personal distance in warm weather. Its the TOP FLITE FREAK AND THE EPON EMB. Ive tried other top notch distance balls such as the HX HOT (overall the longest ball for most of my driver setups), and the Pinnacle gold extreme, but nothing prepared me for the distance I got using the FREAK EMB COMBO. We are in the middle of a mid 90 degree heat wave in the mid atlantic, and sure the ball will go miles when its this hot, but... its relative..

I tried the other distance balls with the EMB during this heat wave and the FREAK goes a good 20 yards farther on a pure hit. At least 10 to 15 yards on carry, and if we didnt have 10 inches of rain the last 3 weeks I dont know how far I could hit this combo. I am hitting this setup as far as I hit my best drives on normal fws.

Sure the FREAK lacks the touch of a premium ball but if you have 2 clubs less on approach shots scoring takes care of itself. Give me a 9 iron 2nd shot over a 7 anytime. THE 1ST hole on my course is a killer 460 yard par four. Its 270 to the top of the hill and all carry from the tees as they played this weekend. I usually have 200 yards left and am in the middle of the hill from those tees. 2 days in a row Ive flown the hill from those tees using the EMB FREAK COMBO. I have never done that and I have played this course for years. There was no wind involved and the course is saturated with record rainfall this year.

I must also mention the the TOUR BURNER TP XCON SHAFT driver is nearly as long as the EMB using the freak , but falls a few yards short.

Anyway for $14 a dozen for the TOPFLITE FREAK you guys can have some fun with the EMB.

Awesome. I've been using the TP Black (08) with the EMB and getting impressive results. Couldn't hurt to experiment with the Freak. I've also had surprising success with the Big Bertha Red. Go figger.

T, sounds like I gotta try the FREAK! I've been sticking to JDM balls but at the price of the FREAK they are worth a try!

I had an AF201 3 wood which had an Aldila VSProto 80-s shaft. It sets up beautifully with a square face angle. Feel is very soft and solid, with decent direction and distance.

 

Very good club off the tee or in lush conditions due to the semi-deep face. A bit tricky to hit from tight lies though.

 

Most people I know prefer this club with a Graphite Design Tour AD Quattrotech shaft (the original, not the MD) due to the higher launch profile and silky kick.
