Grip question

Best place to have clubs regripped?

Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster. Anyways....

Which shop seems to be the best(ie-selection,price,speed of service) to get clubs regripped? We have a golfsmith, a pga tour store, a vans pro shop, and a nevada bobs. Just wondering if anyone had any advice on the subject?

Golfsmith does an ok job. I only had them reshaft and regrip one club, so I wouldn't know much. You might wanna try regripping yourself. I helped my brother regrip his Ping Eye2's with the Golf Pride Multi Compound grips, because the old Ping grips were cracking.

If you have the tools in your garage it's best to do it yourself. For me, changing your grips is like changing your oil and rotating your tires. Yes you can pay a little bit more have Jiffy Lube do it, and worry if they used the proper torque on your lug nuts, and the proper amount of oil, but if you do it yourself you know it's perfect.

 

Right now, I don't have the tools, so I have someone I go to I trust. In the States, I do it in the garage, b/c I know it's exactly how I want them to be.

thanks for the responses. I've never changed grips on my own, I assume its fairly easy to do? I guess the hardest part would be getting everything all lined up?

 

As far as tools go, what do I need?

Bare minimum, something to cut the old grip off, grip tape, solvent, something to catch the access solvent, vice, something to hold the protect the shaft from the vice, a good eye, and a little elbow grease.

Getting the old grip tape off can be a PITA. Sometimes it comes off easy but you'll find more and more clubs with water based grip tape and that's a lot of scraping/heat/solvent work.

 

Actually putting the new grip back on is quick, simple and no problem at all for round, rubber grips. In my experience lining up the rib correctly on a ribbed grip takes more practice than I've ever managed to get so I'm not very good at it.

 

A few of the fancy plastic grips (Winn, etc) don't slip on quite as easily as an old-fashioned rubber-based grip. But still not a problem IMO.

It will depend on the quality of the club technicians in the shop - not the name on the store...
