Dear Master Clubfitter: What length should my driver be?

After years of hitting overlength drivers (47 to 47.5 inches), as accurately as I did standard length drivers, I have lost the length advantage off the tee that I had with the longer driver. And now I'm losing accuracy!

Getting older and stopped working out is a big culprit, but I am very curious about the fitting formula for drivers.

Could somebody possibly tell me what length is correct for my WTF?

My WTF measures 36 inches exactly. I'm 6 feet tall, a classic early release over-the-top guy. Thanks-

according to Tom Wishon's book. A person with a 36" wrist-to-floor will get the best performance out of a 44" Driver. I know the tendency is to buy a 45" or even 46" but Tom has been a master clubfitter for years an has data to back his suggestions.

What does Tom say about a 37" wrist to floor measurement, for driver length?

In This case no one can or should say what lenght you should play it at. It about getting your timing and tempo to hit consistently . At the end of the day is FEEL the one that save you from blowing up your score.

 

Definitely shorter is for better control, but yet you don't want to screw up your timing and tempo coming from 47" driver set up

 

Trial and error is the way to go at this point IMO! I would cut 1/2" increments at a time.

Driver length primarily depends on an integration of the following elements;

 

-head weight/swingweight/shaft weight

-how you have learned

-your swing mechanics, especially with regard to your attack angle

 

and to a lesser extent;

 

-the head geometry

-your physical build

-your strength

 

These are mostly interactive elements and driver length can only be determined in an interactive environment = serious fitting session.

 

Mr. Wishon or others might recommend shorter lengths based on some other static criteria or chart, but there is no absolutely no performance data to back up these recommendations.

 

There are many learned industry equipment professionals who know very little about real clubfitting concepts with regards to live golfers. The only definitive answer to your question is to test different driver lengths in a serious fitting session.

 

(Yes, there are golfers who perform best at shorter lengths, but these successes are all related to the above 6 interactive criteria. There are also golfers who perform better at longer lengths, also related to the above criteria).
