How to go about doing it right?

OK, I have been thinking about building myself a set of Maltby MMBs for a while now and I may finally pull the trigger. I want to do it myself so I can enjoy them more when they are done knowing I put them together! I know it can't be as simple as just buying the heads, shafts, and ferrules and putting them together with epoxy. So...

I want to use either True Temper Dynamic Gold S300s or the FST 125 Stiff shafts. The hosels are universal and allow for either .355 or .370 tip shafts. Which should I use? Will the shafts need to be tipped if I want them to play to the stated stiffness? Will I need to tip trim the irons shafts before assembly?

Is it possible to buy the heads and put them together without having to worry about using lead powder or something else to get the swing weight uniform across the whole set?

Well you should get .370" parallel tip shafts because that is what those clubheads take. You could shim them but it's much easier to get the proper size tip.

 

For most parallel tip shafts you do need to tip trim the shafts, but those are easily found on the web. I know true temper has pages for all of their different shafts.

 

And yes it can be as simple as buying everything and slapping them together. You can get more detailed and spine the shafts or get them pured. You could get a swingweight scale and tweak all the swingweights or go with a moi matched set. Just read some of the guides and other posts around here and you will learn alot. That's what I did and my first set was a snap to put together and they still feel awesome.

I built a set of combo 5-7 MPC / 8-PW MMB about a month and a half ago. It turned out to be simply heads, shafts, grips, epoxy, and ferrules. I used FST 115 pro stiff shafts soft stepped once (.370 diameter) with lamkin crossline tour cord grips. I bought the golfworks weight kit and didn't have to use anything as each club came out at d2 playing to a quarter inch over standard (38.25 5 iron). The FST shafts come in uncut at 43 inches and you just need to follow the tip trimming instructions from the FST site for desired flex and then butt trim to finished length. I prepped the tips, dry fit each club, and measured/trimmed the shafts to lenghth. Then I dry fit once again on a swingweight scale with the ferrule and grip taped to the respective ends of the club to see about swingweight changes. None were needed so I epoxied the heads on, let the clubs sit for a day, added the grips, let sit, and went to the range. The clubs are awesome. I also ended up removing all of the paintfill as I thought it cheapened the look of the clubs.
