Reshafted 2 irons with same shaft -- feels different???

Hi guys. Currently playing x-14s with constant weight steel shafts. I am a 6.7 index, a pretty decent ball striker, and am a feel player.

 

I recently snapped my 7-iron at the hosel (I had Callaway bend the 6 and 7 irons 1 degree flat, and tthen bent back to standard, and I think it may have weakened the shaft at the hosel). Anyway, I had both the 6 and 7 irons reshafted by Callaway with the exact same shaft.

 

Ever since getting the clubs back, I have been hitting moonshots (particularly with the 6 iron, but to some extent with the 7 as well). I just can't put my finger on it, but the shaft seems different to me, maybe a tad softer. Just to calm my insanity, I took both irons to Golfsmith and had them measured for loft and lie. The clubfitter measured them for me and the numbers were spot on with the standard specs.

 

Callaway (whose customer service is excellent, as always) has set up an RA number and wants to take a look at the clubs. Is it possible that these constant weight shafts are different from the stock ones (that is, different enough to make a drastic difference in trajectory)? Callaway is only going to measure the loft and lie -- they aren't going to measure frequency or kick point. Maybe it's all in my head. I really don't know.

 

Any thoughts?

a swingweight on them would tell me a lot. You know guys who add lead tape to clubs after 3 or 4 strips notice a higher flight. we are only talking about the weight of 3 dollar bills. You don't even have to be a good golfer to tell the diff. I wonder if they wen't glue happy, or maybe the plugs they put in the end of them are a little heavier.

 

My guess us that these clubs will swing weight hevier (more weight in the head) than your other. if this is the case, you know why you got the moon balls. If they weight the same, it's probably all in your head, but there is one other thing. Make sure they didn't accidentally soft step the clubs. meaning put a 5 iron shaft in a 6. This happens more often than not, but usually more at like a golf galaxy, not at an oem.

 

thats the nice thing about taper tip shafts like you have, you don't have to worry that some dummy tipped them wrong, you just glue them in.

I like the swingweight theory. I'll get them checked out for that.

 

As for soft stepping, I have to admit that I don't know what that means. In terms of putting a 5 iron shaft in a 6 iron, aren't all the constant weight shafts exactly the same and then trimmed for the correct length? In other words, as long as the newly shafted irons are the correct length, shouldn't I be okay?

 

In terms of taper tip shafts, does that simply mean that they can only go in one way? Either they're in or they're not in, right?

Not quite. Taper tips are .355" tip instead of .370"...and the shafts are already pre-tipped, and labeled per club, so you would just butt trim them to length. However the parallels basically come raw, so you would have to cut both tip and butt as needed.

Hi E-man with the taper tips (like you have) the constint weight shaft, is spacific to the iron, like a 5 iron shaft needs to go in a 5 iron, if you put a 5 shaft in a 6 the club will play a little weaker and the ball will fly higher.

 

The parallel shafts are the ones that can come the same length and weight.

 

with the tapers you can't cut from the tip, so they make the shafts for each iron.
