Best Way to cut a shaft?

I've been reading a lot of club fitting threads lately. The consensus seems to be a chop saw, although a plumber's pipe cutter should work ok for steel shafts.

im hav used the plumbers pipe cutter before, but i would only use it on the butt end of the club because if you put to much pressure it can deform the shaft. oh and only use it on steel shafts.

I bought and use a quick cut saw that Golf Galaxy/Golf Works sell for $40 and it works wonderfully. It has a small circular wheel on it.

Hacksaw will work just fine with the right blade. Putting masking tape over the area you're going to cut will also help.

I've had great luck with a Dremel tool, just use a cutting wheel in it. Works great and is cheap from Wal-mart. :russian_roulette:

well, I have a Dremel, but it wasn't charged.

A pneumatic cutting tool, but thought 25k rpm was a bit overkill for a 1/2" cut of graphite.

 

so...

 

I used a hacksaw with a medium metal blade, because I couldn't find the fine metal blade. A little fine filing and it looks good as new.

 

Put my new GP ND MCC on, a little overnight drying and it's good to go for the next time I golf. thanks all for the help.

I always had some trouble with hacksaws, mainly you have to be very careful when you are making the final bit of cut to not put pressure on it and start to pull the graphite fibers apart.

 

Chop saw is the easiest, although a dremel will work.

 

I got a nice 6-7" chop saw from harbor freight for about $40 makes very quick work of any shaft.

 

I actually tried a pipe cutter on a steel shaft as well and it didn't do anything. It may have been a bit too small or a bit too dull of a blade, but it can be a very time consuming process.

 

If it's 1 shaft use what you have around, if you plan on doing more invest in a chop saw.

get the chop saw from harbor freight. great investment. often times, harbor freight will have ridiculous sales promotion as I got my for 19.99

I have a big Hitachi 12" compound mitre saw but no blade around here will work in that puppy for graphite. it's prolly tear it to shreds.

 

I also didn't want to make too much noise after putting the babies to sleep.
