Iron Fittings

Over or under standard????
I just was fit into a new set of Mizuno irons. Strangely, the fitter believed I needed a shaft that would be 1/2" shorter than standard?
This is my first try at a "real" fitting for anything in golf. I have played standard length shafts my whole life and generally have found that I needed a slightly flatter lie angle to accomodate my swing and stature.
The fitter told me that for my short height, 5'8" tall, I had longer arms than standard and therefore related to the shorter length in the irons.
Before I order these irons, can anyone out there tell me if this sounds reasonable to them????

Thanks

Yes I think his assessment is correct. If your arms are longer than the norm for your height you can choose to swing flat or have the shaft cut to proper length. You won't see much if any distance loss if that is a concern to you since the extra arm length makes up for the shaft reduction. Once you get used to swinging on the correct plane you might even gain some length. One thing for sure is that you will make better contact.

Your physical spec's are much like mine and I too compensated for the standard length with a 1* flat lie.

There is no such thing as a "standard" loft, lie, length, flex or whatever. One makers "standard" club length could well be 1" longer than anothers. There is only a "standard" for a specific brand - even then, different models within that brand can vary. If you check out the Mizuno website, they'll tell you the same.

I do not disagree with him necessarily or any of the forum responses. I realize that we are all different and clubs should be cut or extended to fit the individual.

This being my first time at a fitting, I guess it was just the shock factor that I am short to begin with and then to also shorten the clubs scared me a bit.

As an afterthought, logically it makes some sense that if my arms are slightly longer then the majority ot people my height, then maybe taking length off of the club compensates this.

Admittedly, when I do miss a shot, it is usually fatted and sometimes thinned. I think I have to really compensate in the hitting area to make sure my angle is not too steep or I will fat it.

Guys, thanks for your input. I feel a bit better about this.

Also, add in your posture when addressing iron shots . . . I'm 6' have average length arms- but have a broad chest/shoulder area. I tend to bend closer to 45* from my waist . . . I play my 5 iron at 39" with a 59* lie angle.

You need to get fit to the mechanics of your swing . . . when I stood more upright and closer to the ball, my specs were shorter and more upright in the 5 iron, etc.

$.02 from a non club fitter/professional- basically a dude who's tried a bunch of set ups and swing types over the years.

Did he fit you dynamically? Meaning that he observed you actually hitting the irons with launch monitor, impact tapes, etc. The reason is because there might be a difference during setup and impact position (basically swing). For instance, someone who generally needs 1 deg of flatter lie may not need to have his irons adjusted because at impact he's able to square it off or something along those lines. The thing that I know of is if the club too upright the ball tends to go left of the target. I believe this can be observed by applying a tape and see which part of the impact takes place on the club face. Here's a source you might want to check out.

Hope this helps.
