Easy DIY refinishing

Looking for help, beginner level.

Perusing the posts and searching, I see a lot of more advanced level things, like grinding, sand blasting, and blackening. But, I'm a very beginner golfer who just recently picked up the game.

My friend picked out a set of King Cobra Tour Oversize (cheap set to learn on, very reliable clubs, don't have to worry about messing them up while I learn the basics), but they do have a little bit of wear. I'm kind of a neat freak, and was going to send them in to be refinished next fall, but was looking to maybe do some very beginner things to make them look nicer in the meantime.

I did the basic stuff, like soaking them and cleaning them, and I even tried a little bit of polishing compound, but the clubs still look the exact same. Are there any recommendations on what I can do to freshen them up a bit more (at a novice level)? If my best bet for the time/effort is to wait and have them refinished, then please tell me, also.

Lastly, do you think his choice of the King Cobra OS was a good recommendation for a completely beginner golfer? I like the way they feel (need to get new grips, though), so I guess they do their job.

A cheap easy way to liven them up would be using a scotch-brite pad or pads to give a satin look. Easy cheap way to get a "new look" Once you buff on them with the pad, finish with the fine one and go in one direction and it gives a nice effect.

Just for fun you may want to change the paintfill and learn to regrip them yourself. Very cheap supplies. Look at the Deerslayer posts if you want to see a master at work.

 

Those King Cobra Oversized are great. The first set I started using when I got a little more into the game. Very solid clubs. Forgiving but not as crazy forgiving as new game improvement irons. Great club for learning proper contact.

 

FYI, when I reshafted these clubs, I assumed that they were .355 taper tips as that is what all newer Cobra clubs are. So I bought .355 taper shafts. Unfortunately these are .370 parallel tip heads and I had to use shims.

I was thinking about regripping them myself, come to think of it. I do like the paintfill examples I've seen, I might try that out just for kicks. Thanks for the help!
