Nike One Platinum Golf Balls

The first ball designed for larger drivers - promoting a higher trajectory and a lower spin rate.

Nike Golf is adding another color to its line of golf balls. The Nike One Platinum, the first ball designed to maximize the potential of larger headed drivers, joins the Nike One Black and the Nike One Gold, giving golfers a new way to score in the red.

The Nike One Platinum features a Progressive Density Core with a soft center and a progressively harder outer shell. This provides lower spin off the tee even with its soft outer cover.

The Nike One Platinum is comprised of three layers or covers beyond the core. Each cover of the One Platinum has its own job to do:

* the inner cover, closest to the core, is designed to reduce spin off the driver

* the middle cover provides superior mid-iron control

* the outer cover, softer than the Nike One Gold, promotes incredible feel around the green. The outer cover also features Nike Golf's proprietary 408 dimple pattern, the same one used on the Nike One Black. This particular dimple pattern promotes a higher trajectory and more penetrating ball flight through the apex of the ball's trajectory - it descends at a less steep angle promoting more distance and roll.

The One Platinum is not designed exclusively for drivers over 400cc; its distance off the tee, wind-boring control from the fairway, and responsiveness around the green will match any combination of clubs. However, golfers who have made the move to a larger driver will experience the greatest potential of the One Platinum.

I have been a player of the Titleist ProV1 and 1x for the past 3 years and I enjoyed the ball a ton but was not good enough to really test its potential. Well, this and last season have been reversals of that issue and I have shaved my Hcap to a 2 from an 8. I have been getting good play from the ball and it has been giving me a world of options considering the types of shots I can pull off with it from 150 in.

Well, I read the February 2008 Golf Magazine issue "The Best Ball for You". At that time I was convinced that the only ball I would ever play would be the ProV1 and was sure of it and have even posted such a statement here in this forum. So much for self assurance!! Well, I read all about the Nike ONE Platinum and about it's attributes and the excerpt from Rock that the ball got very little distance off tee, that's a lie. Happily I own a swing that exceeds a 90 or 105 mph swing. So, that did not hinder my desire to put the ball under scrutiny as a possibility to toss in my bag. Of course it had to perform as I desired and when asked. Well, I was at the time playing 2 indoor winter golf leagues at Play-a-Round Golf, in this setting I was able to really compare this to my ProV's. I used this ball more and more during the league and the X saw less and less playing time. Using the Nike, my team mates and I won both leagues. So, with this indoor information and a good idea of how the NIKE ball might play in real conditions I could not wait for good weather.

Outside.

Off the tee:

The NIKE from what I noticed, the NIKE lost at most maybe 1 to 3 yards to the Titleist's on carry distance but I did not mind simply because I am not worried in anyway about distance from the tips. The Nike flew just as well as the X and seemed to holds it line better and actually allowed more roll simply giving an edge to the Platinum because it spun just enough to keep it airborne and rolled more. The NIKE gave a nice sound and a consistent launch angle and never once ballooned or elevated abruptly as did the X did at time with a 3 wood. It is definitely a feel ball and really gives a great deal of feedback.

The NIKE was a winner here.

Fairway/Rough:

With the long, mid, and short irons, the NIKE was buttery and gave enormous feel off the face and really responded well. I was really impressed with how the ball gained altitude and seemed to own the shot that was put on it. Came down softly and the afternoon I was playing the greens were really firm and getting faster as the day went on. I alternated the NIKE and the ProV1x from hole to hole and each time the NIKE ball hit the putting surface, it fed back toward my direction as to where the 1x did not it and it stayed closer to the pitchmark. The X still spun but seemed to release more with the longer irons and not once did the X stick as well on the green from beyond 200+. The distance control with the NIKE was spot on and I could rely on getting the yardage I tried to shoot for. I ProV1x was very good here but I need more control and a better, higher flying ball to land softly and react when a green is hit. The NIKE never failed here. Again, it was a better ball.

Shortgame:

WOW, this ball was a top when caught well and even when not caught well from the rough or the sand, it still revved up the rpm's and played impressively. I never worried about this ball running out too far when not hit cleanly, the control this ball allows you is amazing, I expected the ball to hit and stick and found myself carrying the ball a little farther onto the green when chipping as if I was trying to test its release but it stuck and released barely. I could not get this response from the X. I trusted the ball to deliver the shot I have never done that with any ball before. NIKE roasted the ProV1x here.

Putting:

Let's just say this ball was on rails and rolled like a dream and being that the NIKE is the softest ball on the market, I was looking forward to getting on the green so I could putt simply because of the feel and sound it delivered from the putter face. I honestly do not believe that in the golf industry, there is a better ball on the planet that would impress me as much as the Nike ONE Platinum did.

So long Titleist, you treated me well over the years but NIKE is too much of a total package that delivers as promised. Tiger has something special in this ball.

I really like this ball in warmer weather conditions. In any type of cold weather it is terrible.

Too right, NIKE's Shore D rating does not lend itself to cold weather in any way shape or form. My cool weather ball is the either the NIKE ONE Black or the Callaway Tour iX.

unbelievable around the greens. you can be SO aggressive around the green - it will simply hold or even back up from all turf conditions. long off the tee. putts roll true and are soft coming off the face. to me nothing would beat the pro-v1/x because it was good in all areas and it sounded good off the face of all clubs including the putter. I found the NOP to be the perfect combination of both balls. it is worth trying this ball out just to watch it dance on SHORT shots. you can easily make your playing partners stop and wonder why/how you are pulling the ball back on a string when they can't hold approach shots...

Agree with the dancing on the greens part. I usually play TPBlacks, but may go to the Nike OP after recently practicing with it on my short game area. The ball stops or goes about a foot or two at most when I pitch with it. I would never thought I could get that kind of action on my short game shots, but apparently this ball aids with that. I think the short game control could help me drop my scores even if I sacrifice some distance to the TP Blacks.

I've used Nike One Black last year and it's a great ball for my needs, but they tend to scuff easily because of their thin outer core layer.

I'm a bit hesitant to dish out money on expensive balls that will not last 3 rounds or so much like the Nike ONE BLACK last year.

Any Platinum users who can relish on their thoughts to this would be great.
