It is not BS, you can't ignore the rule that discusses grounding the club as part of the stance. Read rule 18/2B. He didn't sign an incorrect score card as he followed the rules official's ruling.

I am questioning the rule here...if you dont ground the club but make 15 waggles (cause enough turbulence) or whatever or take your stance and hover behind your ball, whatever scenario and the ball moves...it should be the players fault. Once a player "addresses" the ball with his proper stance and the club behind the ball, grounded or hovering...that should be the point of no return...There shouldn't be a gray area like some stated correctly here. It needs to be defined better...nevertheless, I believe Weir knew he caused it to move once he had his club behind the ball, even if "he might touched a blade of grass" like he said...lol

In contrast to what a prior poster had said, they never determined that he had definitely grounded and caused the ball to move.

The ruling was made by the official when it happened that there was to be no penalty. Hence his signed scorecard was accurate. It was reviewed afetrwards and still no penalty.

They reviewed it again the next day, with Weir and determined it was inconclusive. However, MIKE WEIR said that if it was inconclusive, he felt it was more in the spirit of the rules to take the penalty if there is any doubt. So HE is the one that decided to call the penalty, NOT the committee or officials. Because of the official's ruling the day before, he was NOT DQ'd for signing an incorrect scorecard.

fact: he followed the rules and on site and committees both determined inconclusive so no penalty

Rules are rules and he followed them and even went beyond them by assessing it on himself when countless video reviews determined inconclusive. He would have been accurate to take his original score with no penalty.

If he won or finished really high, I could see why even more attention to the situation would be warranted. But he finished 24th!

Who freaking cares! It is not like his placing in this tournament made someone not qualify for something. Top 24 in the Canadian Open gets you nothing other than a small check and a courtesy car.

All that ranting aside, I know. Rules are rules whether you place 1st or last, whether you shoot 67 ast your home course or 167. However, I think you get my point. He followed the rules and went beyond it, even and assessed a penalty where even offcials SAW it and did not choose to assess a penalty.

I think he deserve a pat on the back for doing the right thing.
