Left eye dominant

alignment and putting questions
Hello, I'm DaDriver and I have belong to APA, Alignment Problem Anonymous.

Seriously though, I am left I dominant and I've always struggled with setting up with proper alignment. Setting up square always seems to be a closed stance to me so I fiddle around until I feel I'm in the best position, but more times than not I wind in an open position. I never know what I can trust. Some days are better than others....

This is clearly event to me in (1) putting and (2) I tend to miss my approach shots to the right. In either case, putt or full swing, my ball seems like a dead push. I feel I have to go through extraordinary effor to find proper alignment.

Does anyone have tip or drill that would help with this problem, maybe confirm that my eye dominance contributes to this or that I'm just a dunce that can't define a straight line to the target.

Thanks in advance for you insights.

I with you DD..same problem that comes and goes. What works for me is I built myself a T from PVC pipe, the narrow stuff like they use for plumbing water softeners, and lay it on the ground at the range. The long part of the T points to the target and the top of the T lets me "see" what my back foot looks like set up square. The more times I use it the easier it becomes for me to "see" on the course what proper alignment looks like. I've used it putting but that doesn't work as well because somedays my left eye takes a snooze and I appear to be right eye dominate on the green. Frustrating is the advanced vocabulay word, d*mned annoying is more accurate. Best of luck to you

For putting- I put the ball just inside of my left foot under my left eye. When I check the line, I try to rotate my head while keeping my sightline along the target line.

As for full shots- I have to look at the target from behind and pick an intermediate target and line the club face up to that, with my feet together I address the ball/clubface square and then space my feet out and take my stance then whack away.

I've read a theory that if you're left eye dominant and miss putts to the right, you should use a putter with an onset face---like a YES putter.

The face just a fraction foreward corrects for your tendancy to hit it a fraction right.

I'm testing the idea.

I had my buddy stand behind me and let me know where I end up "aiming" when I address the ball on tee, kind of like caddies sometimes do.

I tended line up dead right- hit it nice and straight and think I'm hitting a push, but it's just poor alignment.

It's weird- I feel super open to the target and feel like I'm aiming dead left, but it's straight. It's going to take a while to get used to aligning myself properly without help.

Glad to see another member of APA out here. Not happy for you, but glad it's not just me!

Does anyone have a drill that doesn't involve bringing other equipment out on the practice green? I'm sure the PVC thing described above helps, and I'd take it to the green if I was going to the course with that sole purpose in mind but most of the time, for me, it's not practical.

I'm left eye dominant and have even tried putting the straight line "guide" on the ball, but I've found that even standing behind the ball, picking a spot and trying to line the site line on the ball up to that spot that I still end up setting up to the right. I aim right, which makes me start to make unconscious adjustments in my stroke and then everything goes to heck, aim, speed, etc...

Oh to be able to putt like I was 13 again!
