Where to Play? Public or Private

I am watching the Shell Houston Open this afternoon and I am wondering if anyone can give me some info about the golf in the Houston area. I have taken a job there starting this fall and I would like some opinions on what is in the area. What are your favorite public & private courses. What courses are over/under rated and where are the best deals. I will be living in the uptown area near the Galleria, but would like info about courses all around the area. Thanks in advance for any info :golfer: .

Memorial Park Golf Course is a classic old municipal course with a lot of history just inside the loop and adjacent to the Galleria area. The course underwent a renovation not too long ago is in the best shape it has been in in years. Green fees are relatively inexpensive. The biggest problem is the number of rounds played and getting a tee time as you would expect. They have a online lottery system which seems to work ok based on my experience.

The only other course I have played in the Houston area is the Greg Norman designed Meadowbrook Farms in Katy about 10-15 miles from downtown.

cypresswood traditions in N Houston is great. Champions CC, TPC Woodlands, Walden in Conroe. There is lots of great golf in Houston.

When are you moving, there is a HUGE Houston presence on this board. Just give me a call and I'll be happy take you around. There are way too many to mention, and some very memorable and fun tracks at all price ranges.

 

As mentioned, around you, Memorial Park is great, the Lakes Course at Wildcat is pretty fun and can be a real challenge when the wind blows (which is always). Houston National and Black Horse in the north West are fun. There are a TON of great courses in the Woodlands/Conroe (Woodforest, Blake Tree, Carlton Woods, etc). Sugar Land's got some great private courses (Houstonian, Shadow Hawk, Sweetwater). If you're willing to drive (you'd better be living in Houston), there are great courses within 45 minutes away. Eagle Pointe, The Wilderness, River Ridge are all very fun (although they're a bit of a hike).

Head out to Walden on Lake Conroe....haven't been there in years but I remember it being absolutley beautiful.

The Redstone Tournament Course is open for public play outside of the Shell Houston Open, as well. We'll take you around when you get here, except...

Granted, it's not the most memorable track in the area, but it's definately the longest course around here, so they've got that going for them . . . which is good. The new South course is better than the others and it's LONG.
